    Sorry...........

WAY too broad of a description to help ya out unless someone takes a shot in the dark. I can do that- about 15,16 years ago I went shooting with some friends just (South East?) of Truckee....down 80 at something called Gyser Springs or Crystal springs. South side of 80 off nothing more than a "fire trail".

Methinks there is just toooooooo much FS and BLM land around there with a lotta makeshift dumps and would-be ranges. I wish you luck in finding "the one" you remember.

You might be thinking of Dog Valley, northeast of Truckee. Between 395 and 89. Most of it is USFS, which is frowning on informal plinking, but the BLM still seems ok. I usually went across 395 to NV anyway. Lots of plinking potential north of Reno, east of 395.

The place you are talking about is near Boca lake, which off of the last exit to Glenshire from 80 towards Reno. Get off the highway, turn left at the intersection and go under the bridge. Cross the Truckee river, follow the lake on your left side and the entrance should be on your right. Good place to shoot. I always tried to haul off more than I brought in. Helps keep the place clean.

Where have you heard the Forrest Service is "frowning" on informal plinking?

Nothing to this extent is stated on any of the FS web pages. The FS is also publicly appreciative of the Placer Rod & Gun club efforts with their opperation PLINK. PLINK is a group of volunteers that cleans the informal ranges on on FS and BLM property around Placerville, then they spend the rest of the day shooting at these ranges.

BLM is the only agency that had issues with shooting using AW's - however this has now changed, but they still have restrictions on the type of ammo used - i.e no steel core or AP. The FS does not have this regulation.

The FS has been known to stop by plinkers, and ask them to find a "more appropriate place". They also actively respond to complaints of noise or litter, which means that any anti can shut down the plinking with a phone call.

Not really hassling, per se, but discouraging indiscriminant plinking might be more accurate.

BLM, as you point out, seems interested in what you shoot, but doesn't seem interested in where, really. YMMV.

Interesting first I have ever heard of this. I have only been encouraged by them to have fun, but be cautious around certain camp grounds as was a war zone with guys shooting.

Target shooting in the NF IS legal. A request to find a more appropriate place could be a simply request based on the agents opinion that the backstop is not sufficient, or that you are too close to a road, dewelling, camp site, or trailhead with hikers. All of the above are within the NFS rules for target shooting.

When plinking you should be rather descreet anyway so as not to gain attention, and far from any of these mentioned above for safety and or noise pollution. Noise is allways an issue, so it is again best to drive aways back in country.

As we need to share the public lands with everyone so it would not be fair to hikers to play John Wayne with an AR at the trail Head. If I was an agent and found some yahoo kid blasting away just off the trail I would tell em to get lost also.
