I went shooting with some family members last weekend and had an unusual occurrence. while I have two pistols on my CCW I brought a third pistol along and had to lock it up. one of my relatives brought along an older model remington pump 20 guage shotgun. the problem was he didnt have the key to his cable lock. I was acting cocky and told him I could get the lock off one way or another and took the gun from him. I pulled out the key to my cable lock that I got from the local Sheriff's Dept. and proceeded to open his lock. Unfortunatley his lock was from a well known manufacturer( dont know if I should mention which one). I have never even considered the possibility of another key from another company to be able to do this. I guess this could be a warning to everyone who uses cable locks. and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

I've always presumed those cable locks exist to be sold only and not used. As such it doesn't surprise me that the companies producing them do whatever they can to go cheap (assuming different key/lock combos add something to cost) so long as they get the "CA OK" certification.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

The strength of the security is in the keying - just look at how crappy of a pin&tumbler setup any gun lock is, it's no better than those BS luggage locks. You can bump-rake these locks open without any problems, I'd bet a paperclip and some jostling could do it in a matter of minutes (I'll have to give that a try when I get time).Comment

Channel Locks can defeat a cable lock in less than 10 seconds.
boggles the mind why I have to purchase one of these when I get anything...Originally posted by AJAX22Anti gun BS...

That's about it, though they make somewhat fun reactive targets.I've always presumed those cable locks exist to be sold only and not used. Cable locks aren't for security. They're a feel-good item that doesn't do anything but annoy you.
Unless you go the reactive target route. Then they're fun.

One of mine locks my boots up in the locker at work when I'm off shift.
The other one I have, hangs over the gun bench and just looks cool; it's got a big red HK on it.
Another guy at work uses em to lock his creeper and jack up while he's off shift.
So they do have a use.
