What are we paying? re: Ammo

I buy 45 ACP, 40 S&W and 22 LR. I shop primarily online or through auctions and we all know that prices are going up and there are some bulk deals to be made but what are we seeing on average on price per round? Here's what I see at best prices lately for FACTORY ammo, not reloads:

22 LR: 10 cents per round ( I've been outbid at lower prices)

40 S&W: 38 cents per round. Can't seem to find anything under.

45 ACP: 43 cents per round. I can find cheaper reloads but not factory.


So, what I'm asking is for you to tell me your secret cheap supplier so I can buy him out. What say you?

A lot of stores have ammo at regular (or near pre-panic) prices... you just got to beat the hoarders and gougers to the punch. Which is tough, because they swarm any place as soon as a shipment comes in. Like vultures.

I've just been picking up ammo from Walmart. Swing by the same one a few times a week on my way home from work. I've picked up .45 ACP WWB for $40 per 100, 9mm UMC 250 rounds for $68, PPU 9mm for $14.99. Haven't really found any .22lr, .223, besides Winchester HP .223 40 rounds for $35. I won't pay more than Walmart ammo prices. Found a LGS that still charges simlar prices to Walmart and got lucky last month, when they just got an ammo shipment. .22lr for .07 a round, .22 mag for .18, and 9mm was $15 per 50 for Blazer brass.

I've picked up at least 4,000-5,000 rounds of various calibers for those prices over the last month. We just have to look. My secret supplier is the Walmart on Pleasant Grove in Roseville. I shoot about a 1,000 rounds a month because I have a range 10 minutes from my house. I also have been getting a lot of people into the hobby, so I sell them ammo at what I pay.

Today they got a shipment of .45 ACP WWB for $40 a piece. I bought three and there were 5 left about 30 minutes ago

About 23 cents a round out-the-door for the Wallyworld Federal 9's. Can't see myself paying much more really.

But in all seriousness I did almost all my buying before any of this panic… I honestly haven’t really looked into buying factory ammo since early 2012

This is funny. The secret cheap supplier is always changing and that means that you spend a lot of valuable time, money, gas and Internet browsing time. I have been buying ammo from my phone while at the grocery store, buying gas or sitting in traffic or airports.

Buying ammo is a part time job today. It is out there. I bought over 15k rounds of .22 LR, 2200 rounds of 7.62x39 and a good stash of primers, powder and bullets last month. I bet I devoted a total of at least 30-45 hours to doing so and I paid exorbitant prices in some cases (.28 per round for steel case 7.62x39) and paid great prices in others (CCI SV for .04 per round, over 7,000 rounds of it).

I looked at my receipts and I bought ammo from 22 vendors in the past two months. That tells me that there is no "secret cheap supplier", it is a little from this dealer, some more from that dealer, etc. Hint, it wasn't from the Internet, I had to drive and spend a lot of road time too.

So the bottom line is, there is ammo out there, some overpriced, some fairly priced and are you going to expend the time, energy, strategy and intelligence to buy it? I do consulting for $100.00 to $140.00 per hour so for me expend that many hours made that ammo cost that much more because that was time I could have used to earn income. If you are willing to do the same, you'll find it.

So, what I'm asking is for you to tell me your secret cheap supplier so I can buy him out. What say you?

I was obviously being facetious. Just like you, I'm finding plenty of ammo but it's from many different vendors and auction sites. I'm not quite spending the amount of time that you are but since I hate driving around to stores only to find bare shelves, I shop from the convenience of a computer because I see it as my mission to find good deals these days. Buying anything firearm related, including ammo, is fun.

8:30 pm when they stock the ammo shelf and take your chances that they won't have yet another case of 20 ga birdshot and another case of 22 win mags.
