Have a fully loaded magazine only (no gun) inside a backpack while inside the cabin of a vehicle? A piggy back question off of that if legal is...would it still be legal if the gun for that magazine was locked up in the trunk inside the gun gase?

Yes and yes.
No issues there.
You can even keep the loaded magazine and unloaded gun inside the same locked container inside the vehicle. Doesn't have to be in the trunk.

Ammo can be loose, boxed, or in magazines inside the same case as the gun. You can tape it to the hood if you want. No regulations on transport of magazines, either standard or neutered size.
