    College town gunsafe

Yes the title is a slightly misleading
I AM GOING TO BE LIVING OFF CAMPUS

I was accepted into Auburn University which is in Alabama and will be taking many of my firearms with me.

a traditional gun safe is expensive and also very heavy

Here are my thoughts for an improvised safe
    Rigid job box
Going to try to purchase on craigslist as it will be less expensive
Secure and organize your tools and inventory with the 2048 On-Site Storage Chest.

Then a golden rod mounted to the lid

Then 2 possibly 3 100lbs bags of what ever is cheap, sand or quickcrete
the idea for this is simply deadweight makes something harder to steal

1/4" green bathroom drywall with carpet on top for the interior

and to top it all off a chain with a padlock around the bed
toss a blanket on top and its a nightstand

Any thoughts or suggestions on this proposed plan?

    My requirements are
    budget friendly
    secure
"semi portable" when it needed to be

    Thank you

Sounds like about the best you could do.....

One thing about chaining it though.... Depending on the bedframe, it would only take a minute to toss the bed, disassemble the bedframe and slide it out of the chain... Most bedframes break down quickly and easily to move....

I park my utility trailor on the side of my driveway near my gas meter. I occasionally think of chaining the trailor to the gas lines.... Let the person blow themselves up....

I dont think anywhere I go will allow me to bolt it down so that option is kinda out :/

Thus I thought dead weight and chain
I am looking at slowing down

I am thinking I will also stash my tools in the bin to prevent them from being stolen and from them being used to steal my own stuff...

Yeah.. like I said... sounds like about the best you can do...

Also.... make sure you get renters ins, read the policy limits on firearms, and add a personal valuables policy for the guns if you need to....

Renters and a valuables policy is not very expensive.

As long as you need a handtruck to move it, especially upstairs, that's about the best you're going to do. Maybe you can bolt it to some runners once it's in place so it's too big to fit out the door. I would just weld the bolts to some flat stock cut to fit the closet and set the box on top. Assuming you have a regular closet and not a big open sliding door type.

I like the idea on bolting on something to make it getting out the door not possible

Buy a Dakota Interlock XP. Modular, weighs about 500 pounds assembled, comes with a traditional dial or electronic lock, and ships in four packages, the heaviest of which weighs under 200 pounds. Cost me a little under a grand shipped.

                          I am looking under $500...

I should be able to do this for less than $400 and if I find a used one on craigslist it could be under $300...

The dilemma you face is the same I did last year. Anything capable of deterring a theft requires a safe be bolted down into the structure ,which naturally isn't possible in a rented apartment.

My advice: can the "safe" idea. Your best bet is to first , tell no one about your gun collection. Not your friends, not your girlfriend, nada. Definitely don't mention where you store them.

Next, store your non-defensive weapons field stripped, with the parts in separate locations. I had no choice but to do that last year being that I lived in an on-campus apartment. The regs said no guns, but said nothing about gun *parts* .
The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

When you come trudging into a new place with gun cases and ammo cans it kinda makes the whole guise thing a little hard...
When you make multiple trips in with multiple guns its totally out the window
I am going to the south where guns are a part of life...

I wont be living on campus as there are so many good off campus options so close
