    Almost impossible to tell.

sounds like a typical shotgun day. i go through about 100 slugs and 100 bird each time always leaving me with some kind of purple shoulder!

My first time using my shotgun, I used about 75 shells and noticed the beginnings of some bruising. Nothing sore, just a minor amount of burst blood vessels. So yeah, I imagine it'll be normal for you to be sore.

P.S. Why doesn't your shotgun have a rubber pad of some sort? I don't think many modern longarms come with a metal buttplate.

get a pad. then save the shells. You can pick up some black powder 2f for 16.99 for a 1lbs. Then order some fibre wads 3/8 thick and some over shot wads .016 thick. Then make your own. Oh forgot you will need to get shot. and primers.
Once you load bp its so much easier. the loads shoot good. different kind of BOOOM a good smoke cloud comes out. Then people are all looking around. REcoil is not that bad.

My over/under double barrel is a light gun; it kicks like a mule.
Even with the recoil pad, my shuolder is pretty sore after about a half case of clays.
I don't shoot slugs through it, but slugs through any shotgun are gonna hurt.

It's normal for me to have a sore shoulder after any day of shooting..... I don't go often enough to build a tolerance

Maybe its an old double barrel or somethin.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.

I'm recoil sensitive, and here are my 3 suggestions for making shotguns more fun:

                      - Semi-auto in 12 or 20 gauge. This is my favorite for practical use, and it really softens up the recoil.

                      - Add a recoil pad for a less expensive fix. Get something like a limbsaver - http://www.limbsaver.com/Products/Firearms/Default.aspx

                      - If you've got a gun they'll fit, get a Knoxx Spec-Ops buttstock. They smooth out the recoil quite a bit.

I also shoot .410 a good bit, but it's just for fun, and isn't very practical for clays, defense, or most hunting.
