    Retrieving long guns from California

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. If it is someone please let me know, or mods please move the thread.

Short story: Trying to determine the best way to relocate my Benelli Nova and AR-15 from SoCal to Texas.

Long story: Last year I moved from California to Texas, and I left some guns behind with my family: a Benelli Nova 12-gauge with extended magazine, and a home-built AR-15 (all Cali-legal) along with several hundred rounds of ammo for both. I was feeling quite paranoid and didn't want my family to be unprotected in my absence. After eight months of living in Texas, I am much less stressed out and much less paranoid, and I miss my guns. I know I can fly them back, but I am not sure how to do it properly and really don't want them to be at the mercy of twitchy TSA staff. I don't know how to legally mail them to myself without going through FFLs, and whether I would have to go through FFLs on both ends. I don't like the idea of them being shipped without me anyway. It's looking like my best option is going to be driving out there and trucking my stuff back. What do you all recommend?

Also, I finally made my first purchase since moving to Texas: Beretta 92A1. Nothing special, but oh my did it feel good walking out with 17-round magazines. Also, 30 minutes from the moment I saw the gun until the moment I walked out of the store. I was practically giggling.

      Thank you.

The more I think about this, the more I think I should just suck it up and drive them back. I won't feel comfortable flying or shipping without buying a really expensive case. I'd have to ship the ammo at any rate and then I might as well ship the guns as well... After the cost of all that I think I would actually be ahead by renting a car the next time I'm out there and having a nice leisurely drive back to DFW. Could bring back one of my old cabinets, too.
