    Kit Build Checked By Leo?????

Has anyone had their kit-built firearm checked by a LEO when you're at a range or anywhere else shooting it? I know this wouldn't happen very often at all, but I'm just wondering what they do when they can't find a serial number on it, for those who don't serial number their builds. I know it's not required until you sell it at some point, but I'm not sure all the LEO's know it.

I have comercially made firearms without SNs. Most LEOs probably don't know that there are millions of legal, pre-68 long guns without SNs in circulation in this country.

I dunno, some know it and some don't.. As for me, I know there are many legal firearms out there without SN's, I have run across them many times at work. I will confess though, when they are in the hands of the bad guy and I want to prove they are stolen the lack of a SN adds another level of frustration. But, to answer your question, I have never checked ANYONE'S weapons for SN's who was out shooting where they were legally allowed to shoot.

You should be fine since it will be obvious that the serial was not destroyed (no file marks). If you're paranoid just machine a serial onto the receiver and be done with it. If you don't have access to the tools to machine it onto the receiver you can probably just electo-pencil it.

just to add to your paranoia and also to show you what life is like.... there is nothing stopping LEO from taking your firearm even if it has a serial number.

If an Officer is contacting you, on official business and takes your firearm, there is nothing in the law that says he must give it back. On the contrary, there are laws allowing him to take it away (public safety, mental health codes, DV...) forcing you to pay a 4 figure legal bill to get it back....and that's if you did nothing wrong and were never charged with a crime.

          have fun.
