My family got sued back in 77 for this exact thing. At 2am ranch hand shot trespassers hounds chasing cattle...the trespasser sued us for negligence lol, pita had go to court ect. the 2 "hunters" claimed they were merley watering the dogs lol and the poor dogs were shot by a over eager employee and our family was negligent hiring such a person....pretty much laugh out of court, but still 2 day ordeal.

The warden said next time just bury the dogs.

You're in AV? and in LA County?

You've got a real dilemma and a lot of laws apply. Ethically, never shoot another man's dog. Sorry about the goat. Poultry gets treble damages for the eggs and meat. If you asked for treble the milk, cheese, and meat, it wouldn't be unreasonable. The problem out here in AV is that both the goat and the dogs have names. They are/were some kid's pet.

DFW as it is now known, does not allow anyone other than law enforcement to pull the trigger on a domestic dog. Black letter no no. LA County outside the NF is shotgun only. No pistols, no rifles, no .22s. Shotgun only. There is an exclusion to County Regs for "dangerous, predatory animals" but don't rely on it. It's very vague. When the Sheriff checks you, it's wants, warrants, TROs, and the gun for reported stolen, registration or not. Then you've got city limits, which you didn't mention. Inside the city limits, don't shoot. Lancaster and Palmdale are incorporated. Then there's the map, the old shooting zone map, that's handy to have, but impossible to get. As you can see, it's hard enough to hunt legally here. Toss in a Canis Domesticus and it's a quagmire. Slingshots are illegal. Airguns, illegal. Pea shooters, illegal.

I don't want to ever lose my hunt license. But like you, I live in AV and the neighbor's dogs get loose and get into anything. I throw rocks at them; that's almost legal. Really, sorry about the goat. They're cool pets and do a great job keeping the weeds down. If it was a pet, regrets.

the warden above would be fired; times have changed

I don't know about the post above...but if you enter El Dorado County (which has the same DFW as LA County) there are signs posted everywhere saying "dogs harassing livestock will be shot" (or words to that effect).

I don't see how one County would get a reprive from a State law.

Where I grew up, a converstation with the sherriff would go something like this:

          Neighbor: "He shot my dog!"
Farmer: "It was the second time his dog was running my cattle. I gave him a warning."
Sherriff to Neighbor: "You need to pay for the livestock your dogs destroyed."

After the neighbors "Frendly Pet dogs" killed a couple of expensive show sheep when I was in high school we "talked to the neighbors" who told us we were full of it and their pet would never do that.
A week later get up at 5AM to take care of the animals and as daylight came saw the pack and so far 8 more(out of a total flock of 20) dead and mangles. We shot 13 dogs. The last one which was wounded(long range shotgun) was killed in the owners front yard. He call the sheriff. The sheriff asked if the animal was wounded on our property. We said yes and he said it is legal and the owner will be responsible for the value of the ewe and the twins that were killed, all others killed and any vet bill for the ones torn up and still alive. In 1968 the ewe cost $750 and was taken from the central valley to Washington to be bred at the cost of $300. All of thses sheep were very high dollar animals which were paid for by my brother working. Not given to him by our parents. The dogs were also chasing my cattle whick were valued at $25,000. This is quite a hurt to a kid to loose these animals because some other fool will not keep their dogs under control. We owned a dog at the time and he never chased the animals. He was a Boxer.
Even though we owned the sheep/cattle we were underage so our parents would have to take the neighbors(others also as we has the dog collars and some lic tags to know whose dogs they were) to court to get damages. My parents would not due to not wanting to make the neighbors mad forever. To this day I say we should have taken them to court. NONE of them offered to pay a cent ever.

City boy if you want to see brutal look at a flock of sheep/a calf/goats/birds after a pack of "good, friendly pet" dogs goes on a killing spree. They only do it for fun as they do not eat the animals they kill. It will make your stomach turn. Especially the ones that are just mangled so bad they cannot be fixed and you have to finish killing them so they are not suffering anymore.

Bottom line KILL the dogs and be sure you kill or wound them on your property and you are legal. As far as checking your firearm that has never happened to me and as long as it is not stolen you are fine if they do want to check it. If they asked me I would ask to be shown the law that says they have that right.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

10/22 with subsonics or cci velocitors but shoot from inside ur home with the window or doors just barely cracked open. That way you don't completely scare off ur targets and sheeples around you won't be as scared......But if you cant find a 22lr, next best option is a 22 or 25 cal hi powered air rifle that's powered either by piston or compressed hpa

Old man Bacchi pushed that bill thru. I used to hunt his property and was told to shoot all dogs.

Thanks for the condolences. Yes that goat was a pet and one of my yard workers. He loved to mow the brush for me. I'm in Littlerock which is unincorporated LA County so I'm not in the National Forest or Palmdale. Later today I have an appointment to meet with a mule for adoption at LA County Animal Shelter. I'm hoping she'll be dog aggressive so I can use her as a livestock guardian. I know a Llama can't fight off more than one dog, but a mule should have a much better chance I'm hoping.

I once worked in Animal Control. In California you are perfectly within your rights to shoot dogs that are even only HARASSING your livestock, not just attacking or injuring them. I own cattle; I have shot several neighbor dogs attacking my cattle. I don't hesitate.

Tape has sheep he knows what he is talking about.Once they pack up and start killing they will never stop.If they do come looking you can sue them for 3 times the worth of the goat.
If you do plan on shooting them use a shotgun with 00 or 000 buck or a 223 right behind the shoulder don't use a 22lr if you can.

You obviously know little about predation and keeping livestock.

That said, I cannot believe California stops a person who owns stock from shooting a harassing dog, feral or domestic.

Care to cite CA code that prohibits one from stopping a feral dog (or domestic dog away from his owner's property) once the dog begins screwing with someone's livestock?

                              Inquiring minds, etc.
