Any papers come with when purchase a gun

I bought my first gun (Glock 19) last month and took home without any paper with it. The dealer is friend of my friend.

Then I bought another XD9 at Turner. Will be pick up in 5 more days. When I did paper work, I got a copy of D.R.O.S so I can see serial # on the paper.

    Question:

What if enforcement ask me what the proof of my firearm? How to show them I am the owner?. I know they can check it later but how is at the moment.

They won't ask for proof and will run your serial numbers on your pistols if you get yourself into a situation like that. Your name will come up. It's happened to me!

DROS forms don't count as proof of ownership. There are numerous cases confirming this. There was another thread I was just reading about this very subject. LEO will be able to run the serial number on any handgun you buy. As far as long guns, I guess you could use a gopro and film yourself taking possession from the FFL.

I like to keep copies of my DROS forms though just for personal records.

Running the serial number will only tell them if it was reported stolen if I' am not mistaken. If a LEO confiscates your weapon for some reason you will need your DROS to get it out of firearm jail. It is the record of purchase and the only thing that will get your firearm released to you..I always carry a copy of my Dros/Dealers Record of Sale on all the weapons I' am transporting or the Pistol DROS I' am using as my CCW.

That fact they confiscate it from you is proof enough it was your possession

A CCW serial number check returns that it is a CCW listed firearm. No need to carry the DROS for that especially, unless your not CA anyway

Youre probably right about the paperwork to get out of jail. A few buddies and I had the sherriffs come by and check our stuff out during an outing. They ran my pistols and asked my name. Maybe indeed to check if they were stolen. But your name does come up.

A serial check on pistols returns, the make, model, date of DROS, type of transfer, all previous owners (if any), a secondary run can be made by name of person that lists all firearms, (pistols or vol reg longguns) but if that's more than like 7 I think, they have to request hard copy or in another manner, so they could run your name and might not find your firearm on the initial listing, because its simply not in the limited list they get, I think it goes newest to oldest

They can't confiscate based simply on it not being listed , or claim its stolen only because your name doesn't pop up, I really doubt very many would even try that, it's reaching quite far
As I recall at one point a DOJ expert witness testified that lots of DROS are not recorded properly.
Possession is good enough to say its mine, unless you can prove otherwise

I found this interesting. I have had stuff for ever that I bought when I lived in another state. I always wondered how it would go if ever checked.

Why the need to prove to the police it's mine? The police is going to need probable cause to confiscate a firearm and me not having DROS paperwork doesn't prove anything on way or another.

^ That is accurate. Before doj moved to the computerized system it was a mess and still is for older stuff that may or may not have been entered after the initial switch over.

Exactly. A cop isn't going to ask for proof that you own that pencil. The proof is that you have it in your hand.
