Is it legal to buy a bayonet lug and attach it to my AR? I want to use a standard bayonet...but how do i know whether i need an A1, A2, A3, light, heavy...?

100% CA legal to attach a bayonet to a firearm.

The other thing you asked does not make sense.

What do you mean by this?

The Military issue M-7 and M-9 bayonets work on 20" rifles and 14.5" carbines.
There are aftermarket M-9 bayonet clones that will work on 16" carbines.

I should have been clearer; my fault. I know there are different types of barrels and flash hiders used on AR-style rifles (light vs heavy, A1 vs A2 vs A3), and I read somewhere this can affect the type of bayonet lug purchased since I need to be sure of getting one that will fit over my flash hider. How can I be sure I buy the correct lug?

I can measure the length of the barrel and determine whether I need an M7 or M9 bayonet.

My legality question mostly concerned the way I'd observed that many AK-pattern (not AR) rifles had the "wings" on the lug ground down so they couldn't accept a bayonet. I thought I read someplace that the ATF requires this before it can be imported, so I wasn't sure if it's still okay under state or federal law to mount a bayonet to a semi-auto. Thanks for clearing that up.

There are no bayonet restrictions here in CA. If you wish to mount one onto your AR-15, go for it.

As for which one to use, pretty much any AR bayonet will fit onto your gun. The lugs are all the same.

Here's the issue you may encounter. If you have a 16" barrel with carbine length hanguards and the front sight/gas block mounted accordingly, the bayonet will be mounted too far back and the pommel will not rest comfortably on the flash suppressor. It will be resting on the barrel.

Bayonets will mount correctly on a 16" barrel with mid-length handguards and front sight, or on a 20" barrel with full sized handguards and front sight.

BTW, look out for M1 Carbine bayonets. They look the same, and even have the same mount on the end of them, but the pommel has a much smaller hole for fitting on the end of the barrel. M1 Carbines did not usually have a permanently mounted flash suppressor and so a bayonet was made to mount on a lug and a plain barrel.
