    Pelican cases... HELP!!!!!

So a friend and I have Pelican cases to hold handguns. I have the 1600 model, and would like to fit as many of my hand guns in there as possible, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm too paranoid to cut the foam. Does anyone have the 1500-1600 series cases that have cut the foam? The directions say to use a turkey carver to trim the foam, but I've seen some cases that have been trimmed with them and the pull-outs seem to fly everywhere and the lines are not clean. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Great info, this is a huge help. I think the time and the small amount of money is well worth the end results... thanks again.

Wow... that guy did a good job. Anyone know what model case that is?

Also, if you get the work done at Pelican do they use a machine/laser to cut out the designs?

Bringing this thread back from the dead... So I still have not cut the foam for my case yet, and here's why. This thread linked is great for a rifle case, but my case has two layers of foam, and I wanted to lay the guns out vertically when the case gets opened. Since the foam will need to be cut vertically, and at different shapes to ensure a snug fit, I cant' really use a hot wire to cut the foam. Anyone have any idea about this?

We tried this out on my friend's case first, and instead of plucking, we cut it with a razor along the lines. The cut outs are either too wide, or just not enough rigidity to hold the guns up. Any help would be greatly appreciated, or pictures would be golden... thanks again guys!

try toothpicking your outline and working from there. I did the same thing and it worked out pretty good for me.

We actually tried that on my friend's other case... it didn't work out that well. Since we are standing the guns up in the case, the cuts had to be pretty fitted and shaped awkward to say the least.

I am a custom foam fabricator located in the san Fernando valley. For those of you who are local and in need of custom foam, Im your guy. As for the rest of you, If you make a drawing with dimensions, or even lay your gun out on a piece of cardboard or paper and trace it carefully, I can cut your foam just as nicely as the pics posted. I have been doing this for 14 years, and have over 100K of different foam materials in stock. Cost is based on amount of material used, type of material, and detail and amount of cavities. In MOST cases, cost will be well under 100 bucks.

Any quetions, PM me, or email me at DEALINFOAM@yahoo.com

EDIT: The easiest and best way to fabricate foam is with a small jig saw. The hotwiring technique that the guy was using tends to leave a sticky residue on polyurethane foam materials. So those of you who have a small jig saw can easily do this at home.

Yes, perfect... I'll be in contact with you through PMs shortly... but my question is, how would this work with the double layer of foam? Do you ahve pictures of your work so far with a Pelican 1600?

I deal mainly with Hardigg cases, and have done tons of work on the cheaper cases that you can but at Big 5 and Walmart. I go to an extreme on my cases, and being a packaging engineer I know what is needed to protect the gun from bouncing around in the back of my truck.......because of that I hardly ever spend the 160 + on a Pelican case. I do however now have Hardigg as a supplier and get decent prices on their cases.

What do you mean by the double layer of foam?

I will post pics of some of my stuff over the next couple of days. My old lady ran off on vacation and took the damn digital camera. Already in contact with some of my buddies who I have made stuff for and asked them to send pics.
