inherited handguns, need to get them to CA.

I just inherited 3 handguns, and need to get them from Michigan to northern san diego county, where I live.
I could not find registrations for the 3 handguns. All have trigger locks, and a metal carrying case.
The guns are a Luger, Beretta, and an unknown brand made in Poland.
There are some bullets as well.
My question is how to get them to california, and register them.
I have never owned a handgun, but would like to learn how to use them.
A couple of friends have volunteered to show me how to use them.
Any information on how to get them here would be greatly appreciated.

How/Who did you inherit these and I assume you are current CA resident?

The executor of the estate will be able to get them to you legally. Are you in touch with that person? He knows the law.

By your term "bullets" I'm going to assume you're asking about loaded ammunition. That can be sent direct to you through private carrier such as FedEx or UPS. Be sure they mark the outside of the box ORM-D

The executors are my in laws, and they have no idea how to do this.
Do you know if I can send them by US mail, or UPS? Are there any laws associated with this?
Can my wife check them in her luggage on her flight?
          Any ideas?
          Thanks.

Ok, the first thing you will need to do is get a Handgun Safety Certificate.
            More info on this here:

Read the study guide and then take the test. It cost $25 and can be done at most gun stores. Call ahead and make sure they offer the test. You must have this before you can receive the firearms.

Here is the relevent section for estate bequests:

            page #42

You can get the DOJ form here:

Also keep in mind this estate transfer is from parent to child or grandparent to grandchild only.

The firearms can be sent to you by the executor through FedEx or UPS. Be sure and follow their rules for shipping firearms.

            Hope this helps.

              Thanks Hawk1.
The information and the link were very helpful. My wife will bring them back with her. I am going to get the handgun safety certificate tomorrow. I learned a lot from that web site.
              I appreciate all your help.

Is she flying back with them? If so, be sure and follow the guidelines that your airline/TSA offers.

Yeah, she is on the way right now. Thanks for all the information. I had her all prepared after reading the TSA web site.
She had a problem because the clips were in two of the guns, and she could not figure out how to remove them. I had her find a sheriff at the airport, and he removed the clips for her.
I'm on my why to a local gun shop that offers the test.

                  Thanks again,
