Gift: AMT .380 Backup

I searched on all the different threads and didn't find the answer....so help!

I was gifted/given an AMT .380 by my uncle that recently passed away and I don't know if I need to register it under my name. As it turns out, this handgun was owned by my grandfather and given to my uncle that gave it to me before his passing. I don't know how my grandfather obtained the gun but i know that he(grandpa) at least owned it since the late 90's. At this point, I want to make sure I follow the law...

What do you recommend ? (Please don't reply back with trash it....I know the gun has it issues {I read several bad reviews} but I really want to keep it for memories sake)

It does not matter how your grandfather acquired it.

A gift from your uncle needs to be transferred to you through a CA FFL dealer.
An inheritance from your uncle does not require a CA FFL dealer. [PC 27920(a)]

What I recommend...

All you need to do is send in a completed Operation of Law of Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction form with $19 to CA DOJ BOF.

On the form:
"How Possession Was Obtained:" = inheritance
"Acquired From:" = Family Member: uncle

Section 27545 does not apply to a person who takes title or possession of a handgun, and commencing January 1, 2014, any firearm, by operation of law if the person is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing a firearm and all of the following conditions are met:
(a) If the person taking title or possession is neither a levying officer as defined in Section 481.140, 511.060, or 680.260 of the Code of Civil Procedure, nor a person who is receiving that firearm pursuant to subdivision (g), (i), or (j) of Section 16990, the person shall, within 30 days of taking possession, forward by prepaid mail or deliver in person to the Department of Justice, a report of information concerning the individual taking possession of the firearm, how title or possession was obtained and from whom, and a description of the firearm in question.

I have checked the AMT inside out and I can't find the serial number!

What the heck... what should i do? The form requires the serial number.... is their other process in this situation???

Check under the grips? Are there any markings anywhere? I googled "where is serial number AMT backup" and found a gunbroker auction that said it was for a "2 digit" serial number. Might not cover much space?

I know a guy who was given an old Colt revolver, 1950-1960 snubbie, he was told the serial number had been scratched off. It was on the crane, clear as day. Keep looking, it's on there somewhere.

I have looked all over the gun and still don't find the #! I feel like a d--b A-s!!! Now what are my options? Help...

Hahahaha. If you want to keep it for sentimental value, go for it. I wouldn't know what to do with this gun. It is also extremely difficult to field strip.

AMTs were made in ElMonte...you may have a "lunch Box"gun....you know ,where a worker brought it home a piece at a time. I would stamp my own # if I was you. Getting caught with a no SN gun is serious.

Nothing wrong with having a gun that doesn't have a serial number. Removing an existing serial number is where you run into legal problems.

Problem is "lunch box guns" are firearms that are stolen from a manufacturer by an employee.
So, in effect it's stolen property.
