Dear David,
Thank you for contacting me about your concerns regarding stronger gun laws, including a federal ban on assault weapons. As you know, this is a widely debated issue, and I am glad that you contacted me to voice your opinion.
As a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I believe that Congress must pass bipartisan, comprehensive, and evidence-based legislation to deal with the recent tragedies of gun violence in our country.
I have always been a firm proponent of our nation's Second Amendment, and will always support the right of Americans to own guns for self-defense, hunting, and recreational use. However, I do not believe that the right to bear arms extends to any weapon that is manufactured, and it is my opinion that some weapons have no legitimate purpose outside of military applications.
The safety and well-being of my constituents is my top priority. As we saw in Aurora and Newtown, some guns and high capacity magazines present a grave threat to public safety. I believe that common-sense reforms to regulate the sale of such firearms are necessary to protect the public and our children. Because I believe that limits on certain types of weapons is not a panacea, I believe that we must also address issues relating to background checks for those wishing to purchase firearms and that we must provide increased access to mental health services as part of a long-term, all-encompassing solution to the epidemic of gun violence.
Again, thank you for contacting me; rest assured that I will keep your views in mind as these important issues are debated in Congress. Please stay in touch and if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to email me through my website at www.lowenthal.house.gov or contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 225-7294.
Sincerely,
