    aimpoint or eotech

i have had a cheap red dot sight for while. I really like idea, but not the cheapo sight itself. I was looking to get a nice quality one but what should I go with?

I want to be able to use it for my .22, 12 GA, AR, and AK.

The Aimpoint is much more versatile than the Eotech when it comes to cross platform usage. No matter which one you prefer the Aimpoint wins in that department.

A single Aimpoint with various rings, mounts, cantilevers will fill every niche imagineable.

An Eotech is a great HWS but your stuck with essentially the same body and there's no way to lower the window to mount it lower. That's great on an AR, but on everything else you mentioned it would suck.

I don't see what a $569 Aimpoint does that a $49 Chinese red dot doesn't, and the Chinese one even has various reticle selections.

Tearing a $1000 bill in half for a Swedish toilet paper roll tube with a pinpoint red dot inside seems like the wrong move compared to an EOTech 511 that costs $200 less and is holographic.

If you don't like the EOTech, look at a Trijicon Tripower.

Agreed. I very much prefer the reticle and aiming of an EOTech, but the Aimpoint definitely wins in versatility. You can't mount the EOTech low, which makes a proper cheek weld extremely difficult with almost everything. There are solutions for most rifles, but it does limit its flexibility.

On an AR? Nothing beats an EOTech.

I prefer the Eotech. I think it is a faster sight and the reticle is superior for just about any scenario. I mean, at least when you spend $500 on an Eotech you get some technology with it. An Aimpoint is just an overbuilt red dot.

The Aimpoint does have its strengths:

            - It is much easier turned on and off and adjusted the the correct power setting. The buttons on my 552 are mushy and slow compared to the aimpoint knob.

            - Battery life for the Aimpoint is insanely long. Pretty much just leave it on and not worry about it.

            - I think the Aimpoint is tougher. It is just a simple, well made, high quality red dot. Both are combat proven and it shouldn't be an issue.

I feel like the Eotech offers a huge window that allows you extremely fast target acquisition. The Aimpoint still forces you to look through a 30mm tube. It really is personal preference.....sorry I didn't really help answer your question!

I found myself wanting to close one eye looking through the Aimpoint. Looking through the EOTech with both eyes open seemed more natural because the window is so big.

If you get an EOtech, do NOT buy one now.

Save your money and get the 516 when it comes out, it looks like its gonna be the new hot item for optics. Takes CR123 batteries without crappy ARMS levers.
