It's always legal to legally transport a firearm from where ever to where ever you want as long as you don't jump on gov. property (ex. Schools, court house, post office, etc.). But as far as for protection, unless you have a CCW there is no way that you can legally transport your firearm and also be able to quickly have access to it for a defensive situation.
To lawfully transport your firearm, it has to be locked, unloaded (loaded mags =loaded gun whether or not its in the firearm), and in no way easily accessible. Your best bet would be to try and obtain a CCW.WTB:
S&W model 69, M&P 45, x2 Ruger vaquero .357
Power pistol, Accurate no. 7, Green Dot, H110, pistol primers large
WFT for 300 Blackout

I don't have a CCW and I carry my LC9 or XD sub every day. As many crazy people that are out there, I will not put myself in a situation where I can't defend myself. The revenue officers are only there to take the report, they can't save youComment

You can transport and possess firearms on school property, handguns locked in cases , long guns in cases (California law), locked cases (Federal law).Schools
You cannot, however, possess ammunition. (section 30310)Last edited by paul0660; 02-05-2013, 10:10 AM.*REMOVE THIS PART BEFORE POSTING*Comment

This is not true you can have loaded mag in the same locked bag as your pistol.. but not in mag well..It's always legal to legally transport a firearm from where ever to where ever you want as long as you don't jump on gov. property (ex. No comment."Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."Comment

I don't know who has told you this but, it is wrong. Currently, long guns only need to be lock if passing through a federal GFSZ. Also, a loaded mag is not a loaded gun except in one particular circumstance as was defined in case law. Yes, Arizona. However, if you carry within the confines of the law in CA, I don't believe it would be a crime either. As long as the firearm is unloaded and in a locked container, it's perfectly legal.Comment

Who is to say you are not heading to the range right after work ? I understand why (OP) feels he needs a rosco. Check the LAPD crime maps and stats prior to going to a location to get an idea what you will be heading to. I cant get the link but check it out.Comment
