Is it Gambling or Good Business?

Currently there are more than a few posters whom falsely believe they can hold a seller accountable for yesterday’s price tomorrow. This isn’t buying, it’s gambling. Take ammunition for instance.

The profit margin on a case of Ammunition is probably less than the combined Market volatility of lead, brass, manufacturing and distribution costs. How is one company or individual going to remain solvent buy selling a case of ammo for less money then he paid in expenses and materials? Obviously he is not.

Sending Today’s dollars away on dreams of Yesterday’s prices may very well have good intentions, but it is truly a gamble at best.

The last LMT upper I bought was over a grand back in 2008 directly from LMT. They make good stuff, their complete M4 is $2200 and takes 24 weeks to get. We think nothing of paying $1800 an ounce for gold and this is somehow a shock? It seems like a bargain if you want / need a LMT upper. Just my .02.

Why don't you just PM those involved instead of complaining about it to everybody not involved?

I paid $675 for a complete LMT upper ( basic 16 inch ) back in 2008. From looking at BCM's website, that same upper is ~$750 today...if it was in stock. Which it isn't.

At 3 times the pre-insanity prices, $2000 seems overly optimistic.

But hey, it's a free country and the OP can ask whatever he likes...

Today sellers are gambling that the entry level AR they sold for $1500 will go down in price. If some kind of legislation happens and ARs are selling for $3000 then they lose. Sounds fair to me.

I knew a bunch of people who in 1998 thought $100,000 for a condo or a 900 square foot house was ridiculous.

This doesn't work, that was 1998 it's been 15 years since then. The dollar has changed.

In the case of these parts, sure, I agree that prices have been crazy lately but the fact of a sub $1000 item going up to $2000 in about 2 months is beyond ridiculous. Granted, if people dont like it, they dont have to buy it. But the OPs initial post in this thread was to justify his pricing in a FS thread.

Dan H., If I wanted to justify my price I would have used your, 1998 dollar changing, example.

Mr. srubb, my intention on the OP was not to complain. If you, or any other reader, took it that way then I sincerely apologize to one and all. My intention was to inform those uninitiated individuals that such well-meaning transactions are risky at best. Perhaps you have a dog in this fight and you see the situation from a different perspective than I do.

Adding to my initial OP please allow me to say this:

I hope my evaluation of this situation is wrong. I truly do. But I was at the Cow Palace Gun Show watching some of those transactions occur, and I see similar happenings here on CG.N. Now I am privileged to have acquaintances in both arenas and also on both sides of this Seller& Buyer issue. I know that most Sellers have little or nothing to sell and Buyers have little or nothing to buy. Adding political heat to this situation just makes everything worse. Choosing to take-out this frustration on fellow gun owners is a Lose-Lose proposition. Again, I hope I am wrong. I hope all goes well for everyone. No one would love to see prices and availability return to normal more than me.

For everyone else, Fear Not. I do in fact have a Crystal Ball on all other Worldly issues. The only problem is when I ask it questions on the future of AR stuff all it does is go cloudy. Shaking the darn thing doesn’t improve much. Stay tuned everyone, give this thing another minute….

Those homes that were $100,000 in '98 were $300,000 five years later. Even after the bubble burst they are still not anywhere near $100K let alone the $60,000 they sold for in the early '90s. With regards to guns, IF an AWB happens then $2000 for a basic AR is going to be a hell of deal. The sellers are gambling that firearms will go back to pre-Sandyhook prices and they can replace their AR and pocket $1300. So the real question is... are we at the peak of gun prices or are we only in the middle of a tipping point?
