    New Long Gun Transport Bill

I just read up on the new assembly bill 1527 that went into effect on the first of the year. The bill reads as follows:

After reading those two excerpts, I have a couple questions. First of all, how would I go about taking my rifle to the shooting range? Can I just put my gun in a duffle bag or do I need to buy a designated gun case? And the sentence that states: Does that mean that if I wanted to drive around with my rifle in my truck for no reason, I am breaking the law? When my rifle is just in my truck, I can leave it out on the rear seat unloaded, correct?

    In a city, outside a vehicle ...

You can carry, unlocked but enclosed, in "a case that is expressly made for the purpose of containing a firearm".

You can carry, locked but enclosed, in some other kind of case.

No restrictions on manner of transport when in a vehicle, except Fed GFSZ, as usual.

26405(c) has no clarifying information. But since the law is for OUTSIDE a vehicle, where you go with your long gun IN a vehicle is unaffected.

I've always put a cable lock thru the magwell and ejection port and then one around the handles of my voodoo tactical bag just to be safe lol.

Thank you both for your replies, that clarified it for me. One more question though, can my magazine be loaded but not in the gun to be considered unloaded? I know this has been asked before but I would just like to make sure.

Other than maybe if a kid gets ahold of it, a lock through the action doesn't matter legally.

That's not a problem. I'd suggest not having the magazine in the same part of the bag as the gun, so it can't somehow find it's way in, but other than that loaded magazines aren't a problem.

The only exceptions that I know of for loaded magazines being fine are gang members or violent crime (it counts as a loaded gun for those)

Okay thank you very much. I think I will go ahead and just buy a gun case, keep a loaded mag unattached in the case, and lock it up. If I have any extra mags, am I allowed to keep them loaded and say on the seat next to me?

No laws govern ammunition transport - put it wherever you like (illegal to bring ammo onto school campuses, though).

I'm confused by this statement. If I leave it in, say, a duffel bag, which does not have locking capabilities, how do I make it "locked"?

You'll have to use some kind of pad lock or cable lock and loop it around the zippers or something in a fashion to make the gun not readily accessible without unlocking the lock...

It you cannot lock it in one fashion or another, then you'll need to use a different bag...

I think I have my answer based on the above post.... I am constantly all about being 'stealth' meaning I dont WANT people to know I am moving my firearms, so use NON guncase cases or bags for rifle transport... the zippers or other closures ARE locked of course. I also look at it as if ever stopped for whatever cockamamy reason, there is no 'LOOK HERE I AM A RIFLE BAG!' shouting from inside my vehicle if snooping commences. I drive SUVs, 4x4s,etc and this transport crap is ALWAYS an issue.

Same here. I put a Pelican 1700 under the back seat of my truck and put all my rifle cases in a large canvas bag that can be padlocked. It's just too much work trying to keep up with all the laws and exceptions, so I just lock everything up to be safe and keep it as discreet as possible.

I think this means I'll have to find a locking guitar case for my rifle when I ride my motorcycle to the range. I don't like this.

One of my AR15s rides in a padded Taylor soft-case. I just slip a small pad-lock through the zipper pulls.
