Don't go crazy on AR extras!

    Hey guys,

So I am starting this thread mainly for new gun owners or AR owners.

I bought my Colt 6920ca back around February or March of 2012. It was my first and expensive purchase of ~$1,250. I'm a student so that amount was a lot.

After bringing it home I started to look on all the gun forums and what people added to the AR. Everything looked so sexy. Flashlights, lasers, scopes, etc.

I then decided to switch on a troy battle rail, eotech and magnifier, prs stock, miad grip, and the mako bipod/grip combo. This was all on a 16" AR.

I loved the way it looked and every time I brought it out at Angeles, I would get looks and people telling me I have a sexy setup.

Well, everything went fine when shooting it. My groupings at 100yds was superb when shooting on bench.

Now here's the main part. I didn't realize how heavy my gun was until I did some stand up shooting and my first training class with Stanton Lee. I could barely hit 1 out of 5 shots at 50-100yds while others were doing it with no problem.

It wasn't until my friend let me shoot his AR before I decided I need to take all this fancy shi* off my rifle. My friend's 20" AR felt less than half the weight and also had a flashlight, which I didn't have.

After that experience, I decided to switch out my rail to a Samson evolution and removed my mako bipod/grip combo (pretty heavy). I may even change the stock out lol.

I can now stand up and shoot without swaying everywhere. The point of me typing this is just so any of you new owners or shooters don't make my mistake. I spent so much money on extras, which I ended up selling.

usually how much you spend determines how light your extras are.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I have a similar experience with my ACR. That thing isn't even decked out it is just naturally heavy. I can shoot it standing without getting tired and affecting my groups.

Before all this craziness happened I was hoping to build out a light weight AR with carry handle, normal hand guard with no rails/optics and simple telescopic stock. I hope i get a chance to build it out someday but we'll see with all this crap going on.

Oh i forgot to add. I workout a lot, so I'm strong (not to be conceited sorry). It could be that I sway left and right when shooting because my arms are sore from the workout the day before.

I kept my ar15 just like the M16A2 I was issued while in the Army. I like to keep it old school.

OP, you need to take into account what application your AR will be used for.

One of the main reasons of the AR's popularity as a weapons platform are the myriad of parts and accessories available to build the rig that you want for your intended purposes. Individual components/furniture/parts may work for one type of shooting but may not be the best for another.

A PRS stock is normally found on AR's setup for longer shooting distances and from prone or from the bench. It is heavy and not necessarily the best choice of stock when taking your first basic AR class. The Mako grip/bipod is another item not needed, and IMHO, the magnifier (at this point).

Looks like you are learning what works and doesn't work for you and you'll soon realize what components are necessary out of function as oppose to having a sexy looking black rifle.

                    Good luck!

the only doodads I have on my AR are a cup holder and a chain to hang my monocle

True, I didn't take that into account.

I forgot to mention that I did try things out to figure out what's right for me. I decided to make it lightweight for SHTF and the zombie apocalypse :P

It's a good point. I know I built my wife a rifle and just used a MOE forearm and kept the rail off. It is much lighter and quicker to transition.

Have considered dumping rails on some of the rifles.

Go to the gym (yes, I read you "do" but an AR is not heavy, unless you're weak).
