    Star Targets legal in CA?

Hello, I am planing a shooting trip out at some BLM land in Imperial County and was curious if exploding targets like Star Targets are legal to own and use in CA on BLM land. From all the info I was able to find on the net, Star Targets are legal in all 50 States, but suggest to check local and state laws prior to use. Any ideas where I can find that info?

i personally wouldn't try to have fun with anything that explodes here in CA due to some idiot trying to prosecute you for having a destructive device.

it may be legal, but probably not worth the hassle.

Search there is a post on this. They are legal to own as far as I know but not legal to use. You can take to Nevada and use there, just check their laws first.

I just found another post, Sorry for the duplicate, but from what I read, it really looks like a gray area with the potential to get into trouble. I think I'll avoid it all together... too bad it's too late to return them, oh well. Thanks for the insight!

Nevada law classifies them (tannerite and other binary devices) as explosives. [NRS 202.750]

However, for non-prohibited persons, possession and use is legal.

Unless you use it to damage/destroy property [NRS 202.830] and/or use it in the commission of a crime [NRS 202.820].

So, don't use it to blow up anything you do not own or use it on another person's property or use it near a road/highway.

              Nevada Revised Statue 202.750
              1. Gunpowders, powders used for blasting, all forms of high explosives, blasting materials, fuses (other than electric circuit breakers), detonators and other detonating agents, smokeless powders, other explosive or incendiary devices and any chemical compounds, mechanical mixtures or device that contains any oxidizing and combustible units, or other ingredients, in such proportions, quantities or packing that ignition by fire, by friction, by concussion, by percussion, or by detonation of the compound, mixture or device or any part thereof may cause an explosion

Even though it is a grey area here in Cali, I find it weird that places like Bass Pro and a lot if other shops sell exploding targets. If they are illegal then why would they sell it?!

Federal law prohibits the use of these on BLM land... atleast thats what I read in the other thread.

My own experience was different. On BLM land in Indiana we were using it and the Ranger was there with us the whole time....as was a local Sheriffs Deputy. And there lye's the most important part... its not what you know, its who you know and who will decide your fate.

There is a member here who routinely shoots with CA LEO in CA and they use tannerite all the time...but that in no way means tannerite is legal..its not.

Thanks for the info. I also talked to the people behind the gun counter at cabelas in Reno and they said the fire dept. did not want people using it in certain places on public land either. May not be the best place for info though.

Same reason some places still sell magnetic bullet buttons. Someone will come along and buy it.

It's a question of what makes it illegal. The individual compounds are legal, the intent to or act of mixing them for detonation is what would be illegal. Think of them sort of like mag rebuild kits.

One of the times I drove across the country I stopped at a fireworks store. It was a pretty big place with everything you can imagine. I don't remember the state it was in, but when we got to the register we had to show out of state ID and sign something saying we wouldn't ignite them in state lines. Selling to residents or using fireworks in the state was illegal. Selling them to others and letting them burn up some other state was apparently not their problem.

Well it was Hoosier NF or Daniel Boone NF, but its Federal lands. We went to both at different times. I dont remember at which we had the tannerite.
