AR15 Importing double check my thought process

I'm pretty new to guns and wasn't really planning on making this a hobby. HOWEVER I just moved into a new home and my brother in-law purchased me a AR as a house warming gift. The issue is that he lives in Nebraska and of course had no clue of the obstacles we face here in California.

Here is what he got me:

From my understanding all he has to do us take it apart and ship it the the lower in a separate box. Do I self-register ($19) the lower or have the lower sent to an FFL? Than put it back together and make sure it has a bullet button and get CA legal magazines.

    Is that correct?

The upper comes to your door, the lower goes to an FFL. Babe your bro include a note saying its a gift to avoid tax. They DROS it to you, and than after 10 days you pick it up

go to a local FFL. make sure he will accept a AR15 lower WITHOUT a magazine lock. If not your BIL must install one before shipping. They are $25 and easy to install.

The FFL might require the magazine lock installed prior to DROS release if he allows it to come in without one.

If the FFL will not accept firearms from non-FFLs your BIL must pay a local FFL to ship it for him.

If the FFL does accept firearms from non-FFLs, then your BIL must send a photcopy of his Drivers License with the firearm.

You will have to pay all the FFL cost upfront. Expect to pay $150 or more for this service...paying less is nice, but don't count on it.

You must buy a gun lock or sign a safe waiver...depending on what the FFL wants...its his call.

      Good Luck

All 3 of my lowers were accepted by my FFL without any Mag lock. Have him ship just the lower to your FFL you will be fine .

My FFL excepts lowers without a magazine lock too. You should be fine.
