    Gun Ownership Question

I'm hoping I've chosen the right board, if not, please forgive me I'm new to this forum today.
I am a CA resident and have one of my firearms (a Ruger 10-22) in the possession of a CA police department. I purchased this gun for my stepson 20 years ago for his birthday. It's been in his possession for about a year now, given to him by his dad who recently passed away. We had not done any official transfer paperwork. Long story short, the gun was confiscated and I got a letter from the police stating I need to file a Law Enforcement Gun Release form with DOJ, and present 'proof of ownership' after I get the determination letter from DOJ.
Can anyone tell me what is considered proof of ownership, since they already know that it's mine? I haven't got the store receipt, it's lost.

Go back to the store and ask for a copy of the original 4473.
