What? What about shooting F/TR Class, that's .308 and .223 shooting at 1000 yards. I think shooting .308 has gone up with Savage new Comp. 12 series rifles.

The .223 and .308 are only used when the rules require it. There's nothing wrong with using these rounds, it's just not a competitive round when there are other choices out there.sigpicComment

Lots of rounds will make it out to 1000 yards ... and beyond.

Most of the money will be eaten with a quality optic, the optic will matter more then the caliber or rifle. For instance it is better to have a $2000 scope on a $500 rifle then a $2000 rifle with a $60 scope. IMHO

between the two you mentioned it is hard to say because there are many 338's out there and not all are equal
personally i wouldn't run a 30-06 for anything, not saying they don't have their place just that i don't own any nor have any plans on purchasing one"The only defense against violent evil people are good people who are more skilled at violence"

I disagree with alot of the thread here. No need to copy the F class shooters when people can do it with a 45/70 filled with black powder shot with iron sights.
No need to discuss 7wsm, 260, our boutique cals when the OP wants to know about 30-06 vs 338 (I dont know which 338, but I assume there will be a "magnum" at the end of it.
the 338 sure makes your job easy. But no reason to think a 30-06 can't do it either. not if people do it with a 45/70 or 8x57 with irons.
As for the scope, it's easy to overdo it. No need for glass with a comma in the price tag to plink at a large steel target at 1000 yards. be sensible, and you'll be fine.Comment
