Corona Turners Refusal to Process PPT

So here's the e-mail I sent to Turners' Customer Service. I want to see what they have to say about it before I official pass judgement:

"Today I went to the Corona location in order to conduct a PPT. Before we grabbed a ticket, the gun in question was checked in and our IDs and proof of residency was inspected by a black shirt and were told that we were good to go. Even though we were the third group to enter the store upon opening, we had no less than three individuals claim that they were too incompetent to process PPTs and left us waiting. Eventually one red shirt had the courage to attempt the process, only to tell me that my military ID and active duty orders were not sufficient proof of residency in the state of California (not even considering the fact that I am a native Californian). I tried to educate this employee that PC Section 12071(c)(1) (which is listed on the California Bureau of Firearms website) states that "Satisfactory documentation shall include a utility bill from within the last three months, a residential lease, a property deed, or military permanent duty station orders indicating assignment within this state, or other evidence of residency as permitted by the Department of Justice."

More disconcerting than the ignorance of law were the blatant attempts to fabricate laws and insult my integrity and intelligence. Even though I reside in a barracks with a mailing address through the unit (the name of which is listed in my orders), the red shirt stated that my word was worthless even with the proper documentation. I explained that I have successfully purchased firearms from FFL dealers who have opted for policies more strict than what the law prescribes. The manager came out and made up some non sense about how the "government doesn't want [me] to have guns." He then began to insinuate that I was maliciously trying to break the law and started threatening me with criminal penalties for attempting the transfer.

The most disheartening thing about this debacle isn't that the PPT didn't happen. Even though fellow Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines die when I fail to do my job due to "ignorance" or "incompetence," I understand that in the civilian world, it's safer to not carry out an action due to a lack of understanding. Had these employees just said that "we aren't familiar with active duty orders as a proof of residency and cannot confidently process your transaction," I honestly would've understood and not harbored such ill will. What is ridiculous is that these employees instead resorted to accusing me of being a criminal.

You have personally done me no harm and have gone out of your way to reach out on the Calguns Forum, so I wanted to give you the opportunity to try to rectify this situation before I publicly condemn the Turners chain as a whole to fellow Marines, shooting enthusiasts, and Calgunners. I feel like I deserved better. I know for a fact that any service member who would give his life without hesitation deserves better."

In other news, Annie Got Your Gun, a FFL dealer no more than 10 minutes down the road, earned the PPT fee and an additional retail purchase of a handgun from me.

I'm glad Annies took care of you but unfortunately some employees and even managers at Turners don't know as much as they should. I always thought that Military ID's were just as good as a california ID or drivers license. Thanks for your service and sorry Turners treated you like that.

+1, this, in addition to general incompetence is why I and many of my gun enthusiast friends will no longer do business with Turners. I guess they think they are the "only game in town". Too bad, because they weren't always like this.

I read your thread with Disgust (shakes his head), to treat one of our Finest in that fashion is truly a show of their ignorance.. They owe you a written apology and some type of discipline for those involved... I personally want to Thank You for your service and Wish you well... Don't dwell on this, go have some Fun somewhere...

I did a PPT there last week Saturday morning - no issues what-so-ever. Never been there before in my life until last Saturday, nor had the buyer.

Didn't look like they were doing much more than a bunch of PPTs first thing in the morning.

Must be more to this story...

and try posting it in the Turner's forum if you want a response from them.

My first question would be, what does Turners pay an hour? My guess is not much more than minimum wage. You get what you pay for.

So are you saying because someone in the military says something it must be true?

I've done PPT's at the Chino Hills, Corona and Rancho Cucamonga stores and never had a problem at all. Sorry to hear that OP, if I was you I would (if you ever go to a Turners again) would be to go to the Rancho Store. I have had nothing but good experiences there, one of the managers I can't, can't remember her name, knows her stuff and is good to go.

The sad part is that I would've ended up making a retail firearm purchase through them just to make it worth their time and my drive, but they managed to talk themselves out of a sale.

Turner's is only one step above Big5 when it comes to their knowledge of firearms laws. I have had OK service in the past but, I've also had terrible service and heard way to much BS from Turner's employees to make them my anything but my last choice for any of my firearms related needs. Personally, I'd rather shop at Big 5. At least Big 5 employees know that they are not firearms experts instead of listening to some Turner's employee incorrectly explain that all 50 caliber long guns are illegal in CA while I'm standing their wearing a FCSA shirt and biting my tounge.

Not bashing on you - but do you think they care? Turner's is a corporation, not a mom and pop. The sales people (for the most part) are here today gone tomorrow, and in todays market - I don't think it makes one difference to their bottom line if they lost you forever as a customer - companies just don't care anymore.

I don't understand why you didn't speak to a manager, or at least ask to speak to one (at least you didn't mention that in your post).

Well, actually I did, and in my post I did state that it was the manager who was threatening me with jail time and fines. At that point, I realized that I had come to to an impasse with the store.

And as for whether or not the company cares: All I know is that Rob Z has made an effort to reach out to people with service issues, and since he hasn't done anything to slight me, he deserves the opportunity to do his job and salvage the store so that his corporation can continue to be profitable and keep him employed. I think that makes me a bigger man rather than just going to gun ranges telling people to boycott the chain.

This should be cross posted in the Turner's sub forum.
