Try to do searches for the friend... it is amazing what you can dig up now on the Internet.

I had lost touch with a friend from back in the early 90's, and had searched off and on for years. I had taken a small loan from him and used my stainless Dan Wesson 44 mag as collateral. I finally found a number for his business last year, made the call, and he still had my gun safe and sound. I was able to drive down (that very day) and rekindle our friendship, as well as retriving my 'baby'.

If nothing else, and they're worried about liability, then file a police report to CYA and keep looking.
