Wonder if this will impact the armed-pilots program

I am fairly certain that someone was doing something stupid at the time, however we'll probably never hear the full story.

Probably not, as it would jeopardize the whole "feel safe" thing the airlines have going

They're given an option of Glock, HK or Sig. FFDO pilots are not allowed to leave the cockpit without the weapon in the lockbox. I'm not saying the US Airways pilot didn't screw up but maybe if he didn't have to put his sidearm in a lunchbox everytime he needs to take a dump... Psh. I don't know. He's still an idiot for having a ND.

Reminds me of when I was a police cadet back in high school...

The department I worked for carried UMP-45s in each cruiser, so whenever I had to take a patrol car out the original policy was "no-touchy the submachine guns". Then after an incident involving another cadet and a high school dance (long story), the policy changed to the effect of "all cadets must remove, unload, and secure the UMP before taking a patrol car out".

As a result, my handling of the guns went up about 90%!

Might I assume that this statement is somehow aimed to infer that Glock's are less safe than a firearm with a traditional safety?

If so, that is rediculous. I prefer Glock because it doesn't have all that "crap".

Its more stuff to get in the way of going "boom" when I need it to. Proper training and common sense averts trouble. No Glock has ever discharged without the trigger being pulled.

AFAIK, we do not get a choice, it is the HK compact with DAO trigger. It would be nice if the Sig is an option. It may be a very new things but all I have encountered are HKs. The sad thing is that there are quite a few FFDOs out there who I don't feel comfortable with. Cocky little kids who didn't do the military but still want to pack heat. My company has and the union has just requested that probation pilots (less than one year with the company) not attend FFDO training due to some disciplinary issues that have come up. We have at least one FFDO that I have reprimanded that falls into this category. I couldn't be a bigger supporter of the FFDO program at all, but as much as I hate to admit it, there needs to be some oversight.

This contraption might help to explain things.

TSA may be partly to blame if this is true

Did some more current research, and I stand corrected. Pilots in the FFDO program carry HKs. I got my info from a couple years ago when the TSA first approved the program. Hope you pilots can get some changes to the program.
