Question for the 870 guys

Ignore the magpul accessories, aimpoint, tactical muzzle device, finish, etc.

Let's focus on the barrel and magazine tube. Anyone know why Remington has decided to get rid of the barrel clamp and made it so the barrel attaches to the magazine tube?

Which setup is better? What are the pros and cons of this change?





Apparently both are Remington 870 Tactical express models with Magpul furniture, same size barrel.

Older model vs new model. If you're asking because you want an 870 HD scattergun - buy an old wingmaster an fix it up yourself.

Probably, because when you shoot a lot, the mag tube starts to unscrew. So, maybe the new setup prevents this?

The barrel on my Mossberg 500 screws into the magazine tube, it's not an issue.

Sounds like a good reason, the only reason I've found so far.

It could be for political, or proprietary, design reasons.

This new barrel won't fit older models.

-Most of Remington's iron-sighted barrels have both front and rear sights mounted to the barrel. This barrel seems to require the the rear sight set-up that is shown; hence, no interchange.

-Or, and this is far-fetched, this evil barrel can't be installed on a non-evil 870.
