Do you know any shooters that might be able to take you shooting/to the gun stores etc.?

    What's your shooting background?

Are you an 80 year old grandma or a 22 year old football player?

$300 a little low on the budget. Have you factored in ammo and training?

I have factored in ammo that's why i was thinking 9mm or .22 i am a 36 year old who has had a run in with some thieves and would like the extra layer of protection. i know the 300 is a bit low but i would just like to know the best for the money.

In your position I'd go to a range that offers handgun rentals and safety/handgun classes. Get some training, as well as study up on the laws in CA regarding self defense and owning a handgun.

What is your intent with purchasing the weapon? To shoot a thief or to scare him into complying until LE gets there?

that is also something i have considered. I have heard a gunshop in my area has glock 22 for 350, I am just a bit turned off because of the price of .40 ammo. this gun i intend on purchasing also needs to be fired by my wife. and i think the .40 may have too much recoil

Well that depends on the circumstances. if he is brandishing his own weapon and i fear for my or my family's life then yes shoot them. if not then yes to scare until LE arrives. I really dont think that anyone responsible really wants to shoot anyone.

If this is for home defense you may be better off with a shotgun and those are within your budget.

+ a $300 shotgun is going to be more reliable than any $300 handgun.

I have considered that, but was worried about collateral damage! If i miss and it goes through a wall i don't want my family endangered anymore then they already may be. Any insight to this would be great
