how to not "accidentally" get shot?

    So heres a scenario,

My house just got broken into and I confront a badguy who runs away and out of the house. If I am holding my gun for protection how do I not get acvidentally shot by responding cops who are coming to check out the situation? I am holding the gun incase the badguy comes back. Will the cops assume I'm a BG and light me up because I'm holding a gun?

It's pretty simple - go back inside and then when the police arrive put your gun away and go outside to talk with them

Stay in your house and don't try to "chase" the bad guy. If you're chasing you're on the wrong side of the law anyway.

Another good idea is to let the 911 dispatcher know that you are armed. They will likely stay on the line with you until the police arrive and then you can put your gun away

Tell 911 you're armed and what you're wearing. Don't chase bad guy. Wait for cops and don't point gun at them.

Not trying to be a dick, but how is this not just common sense?

              common sense isn't so common...

Bad guy is confronted by armed homeowner=bad guy not coming back.

                  1) provide SIMPLE description (eg: "male, white, 6'1 - 200 - white shirt - green PJ pants"

                  2) stay on line with 911 if possible

                  3) REMEMBER to keep weapon oriented in SAFE* direction

                  * SAFE in terms of NOT pointing the muzzle anywhere near the police officers
