Buying an out of state AK47

I'm looking to purchase a higher quality CA Legal AK47 (7.62 x 39) but it seems these are currently all but non-existant in the models I'm considering (several from Arsenal or maybe a SAR 1 though I'd like a bit better than SAR 1).

I have an out of state friend who can legally purchase one of the many non CA legal ones found online, but I have a few questions about attempting to acquire one via this route.

    Question 1)
From my research, it appears that if he purchases and has a bullet button added with a 10 round mag, he could then do a private party sale to me, shipping to an agreeable FFL in CA?

    Question 2)
If that's loosely correct, can anyone perhaps suggest any AK models that might be good candidates for this?

I've read for example that Arsenal AKs might require the bullet button to be riveted on, it can't be a screw on type. I'm not sure if that's just Arsenal's requirement or a legal requirement.

    Question 3)
Last if anyone has any FFLs in Orange County / So Cal they can recommend I'd appreciate it.

thanks in advance for your time and feedback.

Unfortunately, your friend buying with the intention of selling to you may run afoul of Federal law.

YOU could go out of state, find what you like, and arrange for the modifications and shipment to your local FFL. You could go on-line or call a seller out of state, and make those same arrangements.

But can it really be a straw purchase if he intends to legally transfer it to him? I mean.... he's, at the time of sale, buying it for himself. He makes some mods, and sells it. As long as he's not doing it as a business, he wouldn't be "dealing w/o a license" or manufacturing. But it's really up to the feds/DA to grind those details out.

Please read the wiki article - the reason is long and technical. What you describe is the 'common use' of the term straw purchase - but illegal transfer (as, to an ineligible person) is a separate and subsequent crime from the original purchase.

It's not a straw purchase and I doubt any ffl would even think about it. Oos friend buys rifle for himself, mods, rifle, then returns it to ffl for shipping. Oos ffl ships and ca ffl receives. Op does dros and 4473 and gets his gun 10 days later.

Oos friend could save money if oos ffl allows him to mod gun. Ca op buys gun, oos friend mods onsite, and ffl ships to ca ffl. Ca ffl does the only 4473 and dros.

My ffl would have no problem doing this. I could mod his guns for ca buyers and he just ships to ca ffl. I just need the parts since we don't do mag locks here. I even have a nib milled ak47 for sale.if you want it.

Just pick the AK you like and have it shipped to this guy he will make it compliant for you and ship to your FFL.

If that's the sequence, pretty easy to argue that 'buys rifle for himself' is not accurate; no out of state buyer would rationally apply CA restrictions to a gun intended to stay out of state.

Of course, our out of state person could do all that for a bona fide gift, but that was not the original post.
