AK 47 zero

I need to dial in an AK and have read set to 100m then dial in at 25m.
This makes no sense if I do that then it will be shooting high! They claim that this will get you on out 1000m but anyone that shoots AK with irons knows that 300-400m is the max distance.
Should I just zero at 50 then 100?

Following is Jim Fuller's (Rifle Dynamics) recommendation for zeroing AK iron sights:

A 25-yd zero will give you "torso sized" hits out to 300yd's. This is where the term "minute-of-man" comes from. Meaning Point of aim=point of impact @25yds. Hits from there to 100yds will creep up above the clavicles into the neck. From 100-200yds the arc starts to creep back down but above the 25yd POI. The bullet continues its arc and 300 yds will get you a shot right around the navel. The bullet continues to drop with 400-yd's being at the knees and 500 being just below the feet.

To achieve this "Battle Zero", set the rear sight to 100 and zero your rifle @ 25 yds. When done move your rear sight back to the "P" (all the way back).

300 yrd mark is the same setting as "P", so you could if that is desirable.

I'm not sure where the bullet would be hitting at 25 yrds though with a 300 yrd zero, POA headshot = POI chest shot? I've only done the 25yrd Rifle Dynamics on my AKs.

25 meter zero.

Set your rear sight to the 100 meter mark (1).
Shoot 3 round groups at 25 meters.
Adjust the front sight until your point of impact is at the point of aim.
You are sighted in for all of the ranges on the rear leaf.

Some people sight at 50 yards or 100 yards and leave it at that.
Good luck making hits past 200 yards or so.

Official Soviet Procedure:
1.Place a confirmation target at 100m (109.4y) with a spot or edge you can aim at precisely. Control point or required point of impact shall be 25cm (approx 10") above point of aim.
2.Set rear sight at 300m
3.From prone position with firearm supported on sandbag fire 4 aimed shots at center of bottom edge of black portion of confirmation target
4.Group shall be no larger than 15cm (5.9"). One flier permitted
5.Center group shall be no farther than 5cm (1.97") from control point. If not adjust sights and repeat until
6.Set rear sight at 100m. Rifle is now zeroed
Note: Specific target for zeroing in this manner issued by the Soviets consists of a black rectangle 35cm high by 25cm wide (14x10") centered in a white background 1m high by .5m wide (39.3x19.6"). Aiming point is middle of black rectangle lower edge

New Method
1.Set rear sight to 100m and place sight in target at 25m (82')
2.Sight in so so bullets are hitting exactly point of aim. Rifle is sighted for any range
3.After, if set sight on Battle Sight setting (lowest on scale), you can hit man-size target any range from 0 to 400m without changing the sight setting
Note: Best reserved for when only a 25m range is available

So Fuller is getting his Battle Zero from new Russian zero procedure.

The other thing that is glaringly obvious, which I didn't even consider until now, a 300m zero is going to be hard to achieve unless you know a great spot where you can set up a target. You will probably need a spotter to help you walk in your shots. Additionally, hopefully you have good eyes. My eyes are not that good, so a 25 yrd zero is practical and something I can easily perform at my local range.

Even for my AR's irons, for a 300m zero, I set up a target at 36yrds. I have never really had the opportunity to validate that zero on paper out to 300yrds though.
