    General question about my safe!

I've had a safe for a few years, but unfortunately it doesn't meet the requirements of the DOJ. I'm going to be purchasing my first firearm and wanted to know if you need to bring in proof (receipt, model number) of a DOJ approved safe when I make my firearm purchase? I am in the process of purchasing a DOJ approved safe, but wasn't sure about the proof issue. Appreciate the help!

For handguns you will have to buy a lock if the gun does not come with one (all new ones will)

For long guns you need to either have an approved safe or buy a lock.

I've just always been asked, do you have one, and I say yes. Never been asked to prove it. I guess it might depend in the FFL, I have bought from three places that simply ask. Wouldn't be hard for me to prove I guess, but they've never asked me to prove it.

As of January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ-approved firearms safety device (California Penal Code section 23620, et seq).

Transfers of firearms to persons who demonstrate ownership of a qualifying gun safe. Ownership may be demonstrated by displaying to the firearms dealer: 1) A receipt indicating purchase of, or an affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the purchaser owns a gun safe, and 2) An affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the gun safe meets the standards set forth in DOJ regulations.

I always just fill out the Safe Affidavit, listing make and model of my safe, no further proof has ever been asked. I have never had to buy a lock either.

For handguns, that might eventually be a problem for your selling FFLs at a BATF audit - BATF doesn't accept the CA safe affidavit.
