    Firearms safety device requirement

    With respect to :

"All firearms (long guns and handguns) sold in California must be accompanied by a firearms safety device....also be satisfied if the buyer signs an affidavit declaring ownership of a DOJ-approved lock box or gun safe..."

When purchasing a gun, does the BUYER have to buy/bring a trigger lock or cable -OR- does the SALESMAN have to supply and put it on? Or do you just sign the affidavit?

Six of one - long answer at the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Bu...es.2C_and_Laws.

Safe affidavit no longer works for handguns, but still fine for long guns.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

OK, so as I understand it, it's up to the BUYER to bring a safety device or receipt for one

Device AND receipt, unless you're using the safe affidavit.

You're free to buy one at the gun store, but not required to buy from them.

Reciept has to be less than 30 days old on lock, no? Kinda annoying. Roommates folks have a box FULL of cable and trigger locks from NRA dinners(his dad did stuff for Friends of the NRA) but they cant be used for the lock requirement despite being sealed in plastic still. Most handguns from my understanding come with trigger locks from factory.
          On the Second Amendment:
"'Keep' means they're mine, you can't have them. 'Bear' means I've got some on me, and they're loaded."

He can write out a hand reciept for the locks so others can use them. I dont think it says it has to be a prrinted one. Most places I go will make you buy a lock/ pressure you to with some in store policy.

Is the bolded part true? If so, how do you know which ones come with the lock?

Can there be a case, especially in this gun rush, where you go to pick up a gun, the store doesn't have any locks, and you have to leave and go driving around town to purchase a lock somewhere else? Can it be that goofy?

I can see that as possible, but pretty unlikely.

Don't know about 'most'; the new ones I have purchased did have a lock included.

Usual work-around is, on the day of pick up
                  * stop someplace and buy a lock
                  * bring lock and receipt to the gun store
                  * show lock and receipt to clerk, who should photo copy the receipt
                  * pick up the gun
                  * on the way home, stop and return the lock to the store where you bought it.

This works best if you already own, and bring with you, a completely-enclosing locked case. You'll probably want one of those for transporting your new handgun - http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Transporting
