Pistol Caliber Carbines revisited

I have an itch to buy. I'm leaning towards Hi Point or JR, but have no experience and idea where to look besides online dealers. Anyone see local in SF Bay Area please give me PM. I've called around and the answer is NO or that's not legal in CA. Any leads are greatly appreciated

My 9mm Hipoint was my first rifle purchase. I still have it. There is just something about that little, ugly rifle that endeared itself to me. It's easy and fun to shoot and it was inexpensive.

The pistol caliber carbine is sort of a niche gun. Does everyone need one? One can arguably answer "no" to this. But is there a use for them? I think the market believes there is, seeing as how there are so many of them offered.

I like leverguns and pump rifles chambered in magnum pistol cartridges - I have a Marlin1894 (.44 mag), a Puma 1892 octogon barrel (.357 mag) and an IMI Timberwolf pump (.357 mag) and they are great guns. I would use them for hunting or defense and not feel under-armed unless I was being over-run by a biker gang. There's plenty of knock-down power out to 100 yards and within that range they are fine. It's difficult to envision a scenario outside a wholesale disaster that would warrant defensive shots outside a 100 yard radius.

The semi-auto mag-fed rifle in common pistol calibers is a trickier topic. There are a few people who find the light carbine easier to shoot accurately at a distance than a pistol - and those few are enough to make a difference. I think the pick of the litter here is the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 - practically unobtainium - in a dedicated role as a get-home-bag gun, paired with a pistol that takes the same magazines and caliber. I've looked at this topic fairly extensively and that's the conclusion I came to. Most PCC's are for fun. And that's really a good enough reason to want one. They're also a little easier for someone with minimal handgun skills to use with effectiveness. But it's a fairly limited role.

If you want one, and feel that you have all of your "necessary" and "legitimate need" guns already covered... sure, why not?

Well, I wish Kel-Tec would make enough of even the regular one so that converted ones did not cost $7-800 due to their rarity.

I really want a sub2000, but am not willing to pay that kind of money. I did purchase a used Hi Point in 9mm and will have to be satisfied with that for a while.

These are great. They use the same magazines as S&W 59's, which means that if you own a dremel you can use Beretta magazines too. No BB required, and since it's got a wood stock it's "non-threatening."

Love my pistol caliber carbines. I hope Sig will offer the MPX in .45.

I laugh when people talk about a "need" for a certain gun, when its all about want. IMHO After your first pistol, rifle and shotgun your needs are complete and everything else is just want.

Check out the double diamond lowers, very very nice, throw a JSE upper on it and you are good to go for a reasonable price, mine runs 100% with UZI mags. MP5 clone is a nice choice too.

ruger used to make a 30 caliber carbine cartridge pistol to match up to the various rifles. i have a 9mm Hi-point pistol and carbine that is nice as a pair. I also have a 44 caliber Rossi Ranch hand to match up to my ruger 44 and they make a good combination as well. Rossi puts out a lot of rifles in pistol calibers that can match up to any pistol of the same caliber.

Realize, also, that you will get better performance/range out of your pistol ammo due to the longer barrel holding the expanding gasses longer. If you're shooting fruit, you will be getting more "splat" out of your pistol ammo.
