    Another newbie question

    Yep another question

So i am getting a .38 special revolver and a Springfield 30-06 rifle that was my dads. They currently are at my brothers house in So Cal and I am in fresno. They have never to my knowledge been registered and have been in the family since the 50s.

    First question:
How do I legally transport them in my car? I am assuming unloaded and I have heard ammo in a seprate area than the guns. Any suggestions?

    Second:
Do I, or better should I register these? I have heard arguments for both ways and I don't want to be in trouble but I do like the idea of not having big brother know what I have.

    Thanks

You know, I don't think anyone here on the open forum will counsel you to do anything illegal.
I know what I would do though. =)

Handguns need to be unloaded and in a locked container. I use a plain Jane plastic tool box with a padlock. The handguns inside are in fleecy gun rugs. About $15 apiece at Big 5. Nothing "gunny" looking about it from the outside.

Not sure about long guns except they do need to be unloaded. Just me, but I'd probably invest $25 or whatever for a hard case & padlock if it's a family heirloom. If it's going to live in there you'll want a gun sock. Foam padding against the bare metal can damage the blueing over time.

As for registration... hmmm... well you're supposed to register the handgun I believe. Make sure that doesn't slip your mind...

Oh yeah... welcome to the forum!

        Transporting...
Handguns = unloaded and in a locked container [PC 25610]
Rifles, Shotguns & Others = unloaded and encased or unloaded and in a locked container [PC 26405(c)]
Ammo can be in the same container as long as it is not attached/in to the firearm's chamber/cylinder/magazine well/fixed magazine.

        Inheriting from parent...
Rifles, Shotguns & Others = no duty to notify CA DOJ of the transfer [PC 27870]
Handguns = Must notify CA DOJ within 30 days of the transfer [PC 27875]

You comply with the handgun notification by mailing a completed Report of Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction with applicable fees to CA DOJ BOF.

          ^ this.

However, I take extremes and keep all ammo in a separate, locked container.

I usually have all guns in a locked container/case/bag also. All unloaded with no ammo in the same bag.

          P.S. Welcome to the forum.
