Could it have been a S&W?

The S&W Model 52 was made from 1961-1992 and was a match grade target pistol that used .38Special wadcutters.

Colt made a 38 special wadcutter target gun. Some people shot the 38 in NM competition. Later most people just shot the 45 twice instead.

Smith and Wesson also made a wadcutter auto. The model 52 I think.

The gun I saw hand 38 special stamp on the slide in mid size lettering. Very nice gun and in great shape. If I remember, he did say that it shot wadcutters.

I got me one of these. It can switch between .38 Spl and .357 Mag. I only shoot .357 Mag through it: Coonan .357 Magnum

            Interesting.

Do you need to swap springs to get it to cycle properly when swapping ammo?
The .357 DE won't cycle .38 unless you change out springs. Even then the shorter cartridge doesn't feed reliably.

There was a Colt mfg 1911 circa 1960s or maybe 70s that went for 1600.00 on the calguns marketplace two years ago. I had my eye on that one but had other expenses.

One day tho..a Coonan Arms and an orig colt will follow me home.

Personally I'd take a revolver over any of these options if I want to shoot rimmed center-fire cartridges.

Rimmed cartridges are a poor choice for removable magazine firearms; the rim interferes with proper stacking compared to a semi-rimmed or rimless cartrdige. The length of magnum ammunition causes issues in grip frame size (unless you restrict the cartridge to wadcutter bullets like on the S&W Model 52 or .38 wadcutter 1911's). They require ammunition meeting a minimum power range to cycle reliably and the overall pistols tend to be large and ungainly compared to revolvers firing the same ammunition.

The S&W model 52 was outstanding!

38 Super is not the same cartridge as .38 Special and is not interchangeable.
