700 or m1a
I came across an opportunity to get either a remington 7oo 308 with a choate stock or a m1a for about the same price. which one should i get? the 700 is an older varmit version with the factory heavy barrel i know they are accurate from the factory but i dont like the stock. the m1a is in very good condition with a burris scope but i'm not sure if its really california legal. the 700 is $700 the m1a is $650. i plan to use either for f-class type shooting. i cant decide, so what do you think? what would it take to make the m1a legal and accurate enough for f-class?

Finding an M1A at that price, even if it is Chinese, or made with chinese parts, does not happen often.
Buy the M!A now, and the bolt action later.

ETA: The only thing that would make it illegal is if it has a Flash hider on it.

Most 1000 yard service rifle shooters are either using the M14 or M16. I'm assuming this is a standard Springfield Armory Inc M1A, in which case, you'll want to rebarrel with something like a Krieger, get a good trigger job, a new stock like a McMillan and have it bedded by a good gunsmith (who will most likely be the same person who rebarrels your rifle), and make sure you get a NM rear sight.
