Article Last Updated: 03/15/2008 0832 PM MDT

A 64-year-old Littleton man was leaving the Tanner Gun Show this afternoon when he accidentally shot himself in the stomach with a .38 caliber handgun, sustaining non-fatal injuries, according to the Adams County Sheriff's Department.

Richard Steven Brown had just left the gun show at the Denver Merchandise Mart and was in his vehicle when the handgun accidentally discharged. There was no information in the incident report about whether Brown had just purchased the gun or why it was loaded, according to Sgt. Candi Baker, a department spokesperson.

The Tanner Gun Show bills itself as the largest and oldest in Colorado, with hundreds of tables of guns, ammunition, knives and hunting equipment on display. Brown was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. There was no immediate information on his condition.

Something tells me he was carrying a loaded pistol in his jacket for protection and went to pull it out when he got to his vehicle, it snagged as he pulled it out of the pocket, and the muzle pointed towards his stomach with his finger on the trigger. Almost as bad as the guy who was loading his handgun while driving and shot himself in the leg.

I know accidents happen but come on. Remember the fundamentals people.

Maybe he thought it was a Mexican stomach....just kidding.

Seriously, it was Colorado, not Texas. He probably thought it was 'city folk' trying to date his daughter and steal his cans.

what USN said made me wonder... has anyone ever heard of a true accidental discharge? meaning a weapon malfunction while not touching it - I'm thinking a scenario like: an officer has a traditional external hammer semi, carrying it locked & loaded in a holster. For whatever reason that is NOT his fault, the safety "slips", some spring gives way, or some other issue and the hammer flies forward and discharges a round.

(not snagging the hammer on clothes or it hitting something as he gets out of the car, just.... standing there and *boom*)

The whole accident/negligence thing sometimes gets to me.... I mean, in all honesty, most car accidents are negligence. Most accidental spills and breaks are people rushing, or not being aware. Accidental (to me) refers to conscious intent. If the intent was never to do the action, it was an accident. Negligence is responsible for most accidents, however. The man in the story wasn't paying attention to his weapon, and his negligence to the dangers caused him to accidentally shoot himself. I doubt he had intention to do so. It IS important, however, to be aware that negligence was the contributing factor. I'm glad his wounds weren't fatal. That would have really really really sucked.

This was only an accident if you truly believe in such a thing as an 'accident waiting to happen'.

The problem is that when you ignore the established safe handling practices we should all be aware of, bad things happen. Outside of bad ammunition or a gun exposed to heat, I dont believe that guns 'explode' or just 'go off'. Therefore without any other information, I can only assume that the weapon was somehow mishandled.

                  Negligent discharge.

Once I was cocking the hammer on an old S&W at the range for a SA trigger pull, but it slipped and there was no half cock, so I was scared, but the round just hit the berm.

At least he had the gun pointed in a safe direction and didn't hit something important, like that thing hanging between his legs.

But you followed a rule..Never point your weapon at anything you are not willing to destroy..

I agree, most "accidents" are due to negligence.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
