    Gunslinger auction

Watching the Gunslinger auction on Proxibid. The prices being paid are pretty amazing (high). Glad the seller is getting good money for his items but really, $300 for an Essex Commander sized frame?

    internet changed it

These auctions used to have some great deals. This proxi bid drove up a lot of prices. Good for sellers. Not good if you are sitting in the audience.

Good for the seller....Yeah, prices were a bit on the high side. I was trying to figure out why someone would pay $300 (not including the mark up and tax) for stainless Ruger 10-22. Unless dealers are waived the 10% - 15% markup, I can't see how anybody can be getting any prices competitive with the current market as stated my Gunslinger. The only other explanation that I can think of is "auction frenzy". They had some nice stuff though!

I was there. Who else was?
I bought a nice shotgun. Of course, since it was my first time and I didn't completely understand what was going on, I managed to outbid... myself.

        Yup.

On the other hand, there were some VERY nice deals. Here are the ones I saw:

        1. Chinese mauser $125 all matching numbers
        2. Finn M91 125
        3. Fajen Mosin stock 50

But you know what.. that 13% (10% if paying cash) plus 8.25% tax really adds up. Stack on dros on top of that and you are looking at about a 22% premium on sale price for most items. My buddy bought an SVT40 for $750. When it came time to pay he had to cough up $916... BEFORE DROS.

That buyers premium is what kills it for me when it comes to auctions. I was going to buy my niece a really nice car at this one auction till I found out the buyers premium was 15% plus tax, plus licensing, fees etc etc.

Lots of 1911s going for cheap. P14 limited for $500. Colt Officers for about $475. Series 70 for $700. Add in the tax and stuff but still, these are off-list items in CA so they would fetch a slight higher price anyway.

              more beer

It used to be a good place to get off list handguns but everything I bid on went well up above reasonable. I automatically add 20% in my head to every bid amount to cover the premium and tax to get the real number. I think some guys didn't do that last night. Someone bid $350 on a Sig Mosquito that was on sale for $329 brand new at Turners across the street. Drinking the beer helps up the prices a bit as well. There were a couple deals on some shotguns and surps to be had.

LOL I saw the mosquito bid and I turned to my buddy and said, WTF?

so, you wanna pay... (with fees and tax and dros)

People are stupid, and get caught up in the moment.

Somebody bought the G21 for right at a new price or a little higher.

Oh the bar in the room and next door help quite a bit.

Many don't remember the 10% mark up until later then add Sales tax and if you don't live close to Gunslingers you have to factor in two trips to get your gun.

Don't get me wrong I think what they are doing is great and they do a good job of it. I enjoy going visit my friends. I haven't seen anything yet that tripped my trigger for the price it went. I have seen a couple in retrospect that maybe I should have bid on.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I was suprised at some of the prices being paid as well. When a used plain-jane blue 10-22 goes for $275, people are just bidding stupid. It sure drove the prices up quite a bit on many of the lots. Good for the sellers and Gunslingers (since they get 20% from the seller and 10% from the buyer), but not good if you are looking for deals. When I went through the viewing, I'd mark what my max price was for the items I was interested in on my lot sheet. In many cases, the "opening" bid jumped past my max before I even got a bid up. In other cases, I got maybe one bid in before the price sky-rocketed. Very frustrating.

All that being said, I still managed to get a nice N-frame S&W, a virtually brand-new USFA Rodeo, a Para Wide Body, and an Enfield Mk. 2 all below wholesale prices. So, I'll be able to offer them for under the going retail price. Good for us and good for our customers. Everyone wins.

However, I'll have to think long and hard about going again if the internet Proxibd thing continues.

Some items were steals, while others were way over bid/overpriced...

Now for my report, yes a lot of the items were way over bided, but there was still some goods deals to be had. There are going to be a lot of disappointed internet people when they receive there guns. Most of the Mosin's & Mauser's have sewer pipe's for barrels. When the descriptions in the auction catalog said "some surface rust" it should have read "a lot of surface rust and heavy pitting". Also if it said crack in stock it should have said big crack in stock. You really needed to be there to inspect anything you were interested in.

As for overpriced items, how about CZ52 selling for $275 and 10/22 selling for $300. I add more to my report later...

Greetings all, I work as manager of the auction. This was our first Proxybid / live auction. So it was a learning experience for us also.

I was the guy up on stage handling all the firearms after they were auctioned, and I was responsible for releasing guns to 01FFL holders at the conclusion of the auction.

As in all of our auctions there were some good deals as well as some way over bid guns.

It seems Glock's for some reasons always seem to sell at or around retail.

I think we completed DROS for around 30 guys today. I met "Gunaria" today as he was in to DROS his purchases. He was surprised at how fast we were able to get his DROS completed.

Our next auction will be May 24th. It will also be a Proxybid auction. I hope to get started on that catalog in a few weeks. For now we are quite busy getting the local DROS completed as well as billing and shipping the firearms which sold on the internet.

Just for reference 2/3 of the firearms were bought by "live" on site bidders. Only 1/3 were internet Proxybid sales.

If any of you guys, or gals for that matter, attend the next auction come up and introduce yourself. It's always nice to meet fellow board members.

                            Regards Jim
