Questions regarding NFA Gun Trusts
First, let me be clear - I've already done a fair amount of due diligence on this issue, but I'm looking for some responses from those that have either recently set up a trust, or have knowledge about the different options out there for those interested in setting a gun-trust up in CA. Also, I know a lot of people are curious about the subject, especially given the current political atmosphere; so if anyone else has some questions, feel free to post em!
This being said, I was hoping I might be able to get some direction as to whom (a lawyer), or what (software) would be a reliable, yet reasonably priced resource for setting up an NFA Trust (I'm currently residing in the SF East Bay). I have read that it's important to set up separate trusts for NFA specific items, as opposed to lineal family trust that are more typically used to protect currently owned firearms from probate in the case of death, or attachment in a lawsuit - I'm particularly interested in the latter.
While I've done some reading on the subject, I often get conflicting information regarding the ROI of the different NFA trust platforms. Some say the software route (Quicken for example) or prepackaged purchasable platforms (online NFA gun-trusts) work, others say they're flawed and outmoded; others suggest a lawyer is the only fail-proof method to securing legitimate paperwork, others say its not necessary. I've also read that there are different types of trust: "Standard" vs "Professional" as listed on the Gun Trust Lawyer Blog - but I really have no idea if this is just one firms up-selling marketing strategy, or a tangible/recognized difference in NFA trusts.
Also, my issue is like may, cost. I'm currently a student with sizable month-over-month fixed costs, and really can't afford to invest thousand's' into private consultation; that being said, I also don't want to get caught flat-footed with invalid paperwork after the fact.
Any information you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated, as I'd really like to get this done right the first time around.
