stingray4540, keeping something on a high shelf is not going to keep kids away from it if they're capable of getting around on their own. Lock it up, make sure they understand firearm safety, the consequences of being unsafe, don't treat it like some taboo(seems easiest way to get someone to want to mess with something is to tell them "no"), etc.

I have a Liberty safe downstairs, a Cannon in our bedroom, a Gun Vault downstairs, and along the nightstand. I never leave firearms in my Gun Vault other than when I'm home. All firearms are stored in my safe's before I leave the house. Only pistol out of the safe is the one on me.

Also, all ammunition is also locked up in the safes or stored, where the kids can't get to them. My wife stays home with the kids and she knows how to get to her gun if she needs too. The main reason why I haven't had my wife acquire her CCW yet is because she'd have to leave it in her purse. The safety of our children come first without exception.
