Thats my point.... here is what I have so far.

That makes perfect sense... background checks are great! Oh wait, that already is law. I know! Let's make murder illegal... oh wait, that still happens. I know! Lets make drugs illegal... oh wait, that still happens. I know! lets make drunk driving illegal...oh wait, over 10,000 people die yearly from that. Yup! It still happens. Oh wait! Let's ban so called "high capacity magazines"! Oh wait, Columbine still happened...even during the federal "assault weapons" ban! How can that be?! Oh wait, let's make it illegal to have guns for people with mental instability or drug abuse problems, weird... that's one of the first questions required on paperwork during a gun sale. Guess what? People lie and dishonesty still happens! Here are some real world statistics straight from the FBI for 2011 involving the state of California who has some of the most strict gun laws in the nation. Guess how many people were killed in 2011 by knives? 261! Guess how many people were killed in 2011 by "any other weapon" (including hammers and sticks)? 208! How many people were killed in 2011 with hands, fists, and feet? 101! How many people were killed in 2011 with rifles (ALL rifles ranging from so called "assault weapons" to bolt action hunting rifles)? 45!! Fourty Five!!!

Don't fall for all the media hype about how guns are the problem. People are the problem. Society's moral decline is the problem. Mexico doesn't allow citizens to own firearms. How is that working out for them? With all of this being said, I completely respect your opinion and gladly extend an invitation to even take you to the shooting range on my dime. Twenty bucks says your face lights up like a little girl on Christmas morning the first time you pull the trigger.

I see nothing wrong with enacting laws on gun sales providing they make sense. Background checks and straw purchase laws are fine with me. Laws that prevent the sale of guns to prohibited people is ok by me. Are there dumb laws? Hell yes but he doesn't really specify what kind of laws and until he states something specific, I would ignore it.

This was his reply..."Hahahahaha, on that last comment...made me laugh for real. I'm aware that people are the problem. However, I see nothing wrong with imposing stricter regulations. You can't tell me that there is not a possibility that stricter regulations on guns might possibly help the crime rate...even if it be such a small percentage. The fact is, that we have no way of knowing whether or not it might help. On the other hand, I don't see how such laws could affect anyone in a negative manner."

and here was my rebuttal..."Oh I forgot to include this... in California. Your not even allowed to buy a gun unless you study and pass a test to get your "handgun safety card. After this is done, you can pick out a firearm and pay your money...but your only allowed to buy a new gun from a store if it is on the "roster of approved handguns". Once that's all said and done, the purchase process starts. You have to fill out a large packet asking information about mental health, drug abuse, or other problems that may inhibit you from being a responsible gun owner. You have to show two forms of ID proving you are a California resident. Then, you have to have a background check. That't not all! Once all that is complete, you have to wait 10 days before you are able to pick up your new gun...and if it turns out you want to buy another? You have to wait an entire month before being able to purchase another handgun. Then the aforementioned process starts all over again. As you can see, many laws are already in place... you can't legislate evil. If a bad guy want to kill, he is going to kill whether by gun, car, hammer, stick , fist, etc..."

His final reply? "I wasn't aware of all of these laws already in place though...that is pretty extreme already"

I added this..." Well now you know I was't trying to pick a fight, but the reality is that most people who support "common sense gun legislation" aren't aware about the hundreds of laws that are already in place... you just so happened to give me a chance enlighten you on the subject. Of course things very from state to state, but firearm ownership is not as willy nilly as the media portrays it to be. If you ever wanna pop off a few rounds, the offer still stands."

And his final reply? "I'm glad I know this now. Thanks for the info man, and I'll be glad to pass it along. As for the shooting range, I might just have to take you up on that".

And if you would have "defriended" him, like so many on this forum do, he would still be uneducated and spreading misinformation.

While there are many out there who are incapable of logical thought processes, there are many more that are just uneducated, and ill informed that have based there opinions on assumptions.
Those people, only need to be educated in a respectful manner, as you did. Now he is spreading the word.

See, it's about education, not taking your toys and going home because you disagree. That's just childish.
