Whats with the AR15 craze?

Is it just because they might get banned soon people are buying them up? I shot one for the first time the other day (S&W M&P15) and it was ok. Living in a very populated area like the OC, I could not see any use for it really. Too big to carry obviously and there is no way I would choose it over a shotgun for home defense. If I was hunting out in open spaces trying to pick off animals from 100 yards then yes, fantastic choice but I highly doubt everyone suddenly became hunters overnight. So why the hysteria?

i think a lot if it is being told you cant have one. i have a couple if friends who didint show much interest in the ar platform both of whom are trying to buy one or a lower. theyy have become very popular with varmint hunters , and with the larger caliber now avalible in uppers they are very good hunting rifles. they are like the jeeps of the truck world, you can buy limited accesories for scouts , landcruisers, and broncos , but for jeeps and ar's the accessories are unlimited.

Try building one yourself and/or taking a rifle course with one. You'll see how fun and addicting they can get.

I have one just cause it's what I trained with when I was enlisted. It's ok (just that ok) I prefer my M1 Garand and M1A when going to the range.

I know really, what happened? I am totally so totally confused as to how this gun and ammo panic that you speak of might be happening. You seem very sharp and on top of things so please let us know if you solve this puzzling "mystery."

I've shot the 5.56 round before. Wasn't too big a fan. I mean, yeah, it's fun. Might have just been the gun, but who knows. Didn't seem to be much to me.

As for why the military uses it, when it's sub par compared to what they used to use, I'll never know.

It has to do with this "buy now or regret later" mentality.
I personally don't think AR pattern rifles will get banned at a national level, but the normal cap mags are another story.
