Don't know if this belongs in this section but I was curious, has anyone in the South Bay area taken their off-list lower/cali legal AR to LAX shooting range or any indoor ranges? I'm not much of a morning person so rather go in the evening times but I know outdoor places arn't open at night.

LAX shooting range.

I work fairly close to the LAX range and have been there a few times. They allow centerfire rifles, but you have to buy their frangible ammo (don't know prices). It's run professionally, but there definitely are some shady/and or inexperienced people in there taking advantage of the rentals from time to time. I always try to be very aware of who is around me when I'm there. The parking in the front is almost always full, but after 5 you can park in the car wash next door (if you have a ccw I would carry, but the walk isn't too far).

It's been a few years, so my information may be VERY out of date. However, I have shot an AR in the LAX range. They asked me what kind of rifle I was shooting, I showed them the ammo that I had brought with me, paid my fee and spent the next hour or so turning some friends onto the joys of the AR15 rifle.
An outdoor range would definitely be the way to go though. When I lived down there I was a member of the Ojai Valley Gun Club. Great range. Up in the hills just a couple hours from LA.
When you become a member they give you the combination to the gate and you can get out there anytime. They have a camping area, 600 yd range, shorter rifle and psitol ranges, black powder area, bow area. Also, they have cannon and mortar shoots several times a year.
Great stuff for a family membership of $50 per year.

Call Dan Kash, Owner of LAX, at (310) 568-1515.... anyone who answers the phone over there will be able to give you an honest answer. I shot their 9mm AR not too long ago, and I know they have allowed AR's from the outside to be shot on several specific lanes. I also know they are up on most of the legal stuff, and tons of LE personell shoot there, (including ATF, FBI, etc.). Some "off duty" LEO have been known to ask questions of potential law breakers who happen to shoot there, and some of the agents shooting there will nose their way into your business, and ask questions about your gear, if they feel like it..... So make sure you bring any proof that you're in compliance, just in case.
Or, you can just go to their site:

Yeah, I checked their website and it stated that you are allowed to bring hi-powered rifles as long as you buy their frangible .223 ammunition. I was just curious to see if anyone brought their cali-legal AR yet. Especially with the whole deal if the fixed magazine with the sporting conversion is "legal."Last edited by xYourLocalAR15x; 03-23-2006, 1:42 AM.Comment

Don't know about LA, but Iron Sights in Oceanside will let you shoot rifles indoors, no frangible ammo requirements - just no steel core.Originally posted by snacksnot aware of any indoor ranges that would allow rifles indoors. Your best bet is to go to an outdoor range and shoot. Inddors and in the city is kind of scary.
They do have a sensible limit, I think 30'06 is the highest you can go. I do fire my 8mm Hakim there, and you see Garand guys there sometimes too.Primary author of gunwiki.net - 'like' it on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Gunwiki/242578512591 to see whenever new content gets added!Comment

Ive shot my sks there with my own ammo.
Going there is such a mixed bag though, I always feel I'm gonna get jacked outside walking to the range.
And any sort of manners/friendliness and decency was lost on all staff.
Then, you have to be lucky not to be shot by a bunch of 20-something thug renters in the lane next to you.
OTOH, you do get to shoot a rifle on a lunch hour, which is a bonus if you live in LA.Comment

been there once, had to show them my ID to even look at the guns for sale. LE sales only, I understand their thinking in this sue happy world and especially in the location they're in but I dont enjoy doing business with people that are LE/mil only for firearms sales.
But they did sign a letter stating that my buddy shoots there often so that he could get his CCW.
Also MANY indoor ranges allow rifles if you shoot frangible. Sometimes you just need to ask.Last edited by Josh; 03-23-2006, 11:04 AM.Comment

I don't like LAX range anymore....the range fee is higher if you bring your own ammo and yet they claim they have competitive prices on ammunition. Not true, it was still cheaper to bring my own ammo and pay their higher extortion, uh, i mean lane fee.
As far as the facility goes, it is a decent place.
They used to allow high power rifles in there, even with full metal jacket, but they have changed their policy to only allow frangible ammunition.
The indoor shooting range near me in SD allows up to 300 win mag of full metal jacket.Expert firearms attorney: https://www.rwslaw.com/team/adam-j-richards/

Josh, you're way off base with this! I can understand your dissappointment... but I know for a fact that they are in that situation, for no reason even remotely related to this being a "sue happy" world. Last time I checked with them, they were trying to resolve this... and it just about took an act of congress for them to get a FFL/ dealers license. When Dan (the owner) sells all of his range guns, (to make room for his new ones) he has to have all of the transfers done through an FFl (which can be a pain in the ***!!!). I'm sure he'd love to have the business of any and all of his customers (with respect to firearms sales), but I highly doubt that FEAR is limiting his decision to sell to the general public.Comment

I wasnt really disapointed as I could have bought one had I felt like it and it is their business not mine. Really really liked the .44mag S&W they had.Originally posted by ALTSEC972Josh, you're way off base with this! I can understand your dissappointment...
If its not from some caution about who they sell to or lawsuits coming from such then what is it? I dont think the DOJ can put any restriction on who they sell to as long as the buyer is all squared away. Only other thing I can think of is some city imposed restriction.Comment
