In LA, no ammo sales a week before New Years.

Went by Turners in Reseda for first time
    since the frenzy started.

They were busy but not as much; but I only went in
    as I saw parking.
Saw sign about no ammo sales the week before New Years.
That along with LAPD warning on Nixle, exhorting anyone
not to shoot into air as they say every year there are people hurt.

That kind of shooting is the dumbest, almost as much as
the guy playing Russian roulette with a glock.

Guess a week of no ammo sales will allow restocking.
Perhaps Jan 2nd one should be first in line for ammo?!

Anybody know what the damage stats are
    for people hurt this way?

Yeah, they started that years ago---doubt it ever did any good---but there it is...

Kinda odd years/stats but what a quick google turned up
Between the years 1985 and 1992, doctors at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, treated some 118 people for random falling-bullet injuries. Thirty-eight of them died.

A bullet shot in the air falls to earth due to gravity. Its not fired at you from heaven, its dropped from whatever height.

I don't want it dropped on my head, but its not particularly deadly.

There's a myth busters on it. They draw the same conclusion.

It couldn't be some crazy conspiracy theory like, oh, gunshot victims *lying* about how they got shot or anything.

I always thought blocking ammo sales for New Years or 4th of July was stupid especially when on New Year's I still hear hundreds of guns being shot off in LA. It makes no difference and I don't believe people set out to buy ammo just to shoot off a gun in the air on New Year's no matter how stupid they may be. Stupid people will only do it if convenient, ammo is already on hand, and the thought crosses their mind; not actively set out to get ammo to do it. I know because I lived in a neighborhood filled with stupid people.

The only benefit may be in that Turners Reseda won't be so busy tomorrow when I go in to pick up after my 10 day persecution!

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

True, straight up, straight down, if a perfect vertical. However, speed in one direction does not change speed in other directions, so gravity means little on a bullet that is shot from a firearm with a measurable horizontal plane/angle; and many people that "shoot into the air" do so, not straight up, but often at an angle ( usually because they are drunk ).

The Mythbusters episode made acknowledgement of that as well.

Interesting. I kind of figured as much,
gravity is 32 ft per second squared. But if shot at an angle,
                    Bullets still have greater velocity.

Of course I already knew, but myth busters proved that bullets fall back to earth without enough energy to even break the skin....that's if they're fired straight up, at a certain angle though, around 50 degrees +- bullets retain ballistic energy for the whole flight so those might cause injury, bottom line there is little to no danger posed by falling bullets..

Cue RS with some urban legend police stories about bullets going through the roofs of cruisers...

What kind of person thinks " oh snap foo, New Years is comin' up, I better run down to la tienda and get some bullets, eh Holmes"

Oh wait, we're talkin about LA- yeah, it's prolly a good idea to cut off ammo sales in certain areas...
