    Body Armor recommendations

    Hey Calgunners

I am looking at getting some body armor (before it's outlawed :-)) and looking for advice.

My "scenario" is if there is a bad earthquake here in NorCal and I need to get to my ranch (about 30mins by car), where I have unlimited water, lots of food etc. I have an AR setup and a battle belt from US grunt gear.

I know that there are bad guys who will take what they want, and I've been thinking that I should have some body armor - nothing too serious, just something that would allow me to get to the ranch feeling secure - and perhaps something for my wife to wear.

I was in the Army before the days of body armor, and don't know anything. Don't want anything gold plated, and not going too heavy in case I need to walk to the ranch.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

I just bought some for around $200. Get some lvl III AR500 armor plates off of ebay and get a plate carrier ($60). The plates can take up to a 308. But heads up, they are leaning towards the heavy side (16lbs for back and front plates combined). I also got some trauma plates to put behind them.

If 16lbs is pushing too much check out the ceramic plates then.

oh, and thank you for your service sir!

Wear your armor anytime you're shooting or training. Another passive safety device.

Look for a sub-forum here for The Target Man

I have purchased from him and I would recommend him to others.

Check out the US Palm Defender Setup. 200 bucks and lots of options.

Thanks - will do. I think what you guys are recommending is to just go with a plate carrier with front and back plates? This is not daily wear stuff, for emergencies only.

Does something like this make sense? https://www.diamondbacktactical.com/...late_carriers/

I bin looking around, and settled on the coated plates from The Target Man. I believe their CG discount thang is still going on, just have to wait until their carrier becomes available. If I were going with pistol-rated soft armor, the US Palm stuff would be at the top of the list.

Personally, I wouldn't buy something like body armor off of ebay, just too many variables for my taste.

Took a look at their catalog, they have a lot of good ideas. I like the low-profile stuff like the suit vest and the windbreaker. Looks like they're using dyneema for the rifle plates though, check out the link Seven_Duce posted.

Thanks for all the great posts everyone. Seems like I am now getting recommendations to go with Surplus military OTV style armor. I'll keep researching, but this is a confusing space.
