    Cleaning my AR 15

I can clean my truck quicker than it toke me to strip and clean my rifle granted it was only my second time doing so but should it take over an hour to do, or am i been way to anal, used both push rod with brush and patches for the barrel followed by a bore snake, CLP and Tetra for the inside of the barrel and T 17 foaming agent for the breech cleaned the bolt with CLP stripping it first, used a jag and patch on the inside of the bolt housing, CLP to the lower trigger mechanisem and CLP to the out side once put back together, did this out side as its a messy jop , is this how it is for you guys or does it get easier with time and less messy, hmm how much lube and whats the best lube to use for the action/bolt, what dry lube is best to use so there is less liquid to greese up and collect dust and dirt. a friend showed me some which was red in a small jar but i have forgotten what it is called any ideas. its super slik and does not attract dust. thanks .

I have stripped and cleaned mine 3 times.

I spend about 20 minutes on it. The lower seems to stay clean, very simple cleanup. I run the snake and clean up the upper, but overall, not much comes out. I get way more out of my Sig P226 than the AR!

Would like to know what is used by others for the cleaning.

        Try http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/maintenance/

Multiple cleaners are not necessary, CLP is what you need.

CLP, remove the most aggressive carbon, Boresnake the tube, re-lube the bolt and carrier, put in safe.

Shouldn't take you 10 minutes. No need to "white glove" clean it.

The more time you spend cleaning it, the more your rifle will love you

No need to give it the works every time. You should observe the wear and tear points and make sure those are cleaned, and lubed. Gas holes, moving parts and so on. The AR milspec manual gives some good pointers as to what's really needed and its not much. These rifles are designed to take a beating and keep on ticking. Clean the bolt, run a few patches through the bore and wipe the gunk off the rest of the rifle. You should be able to do that in less than 10 minutes. I give my rifles a quick cleaning at the end of a shooting day, and give them a "white glove" cleaning once a year. They still love me back

Standard procedure back in the day was to disassemble the bolt, even down to removing the firing pin and extractor, and then clean the whole thing to within an inch of its life. Do you .mil guys still do this? The upper and lower (sans bolt) are relatively easy, especially if you have the special chamber brush, but getting the carbon off the bolt and cleaning out the bolt carrier is very time consuming.

Breakfree CLP comes in 2 and 4 oz squeeze bottles and aerosol cans. Some gun/ sports shops in Santa Clara County carry it (Reed's Sports Shop, Reed's Indoor, Big 5). Walmart carries it. You can buy pint spray bottles at gunshows. If you want to pay for shipping, you can find gallon bottles online.

I get it by the pint bottle and refill the smaller containers as necessary.

Occasionally Mountain View Surplus carries pint spray bottles of military surplus CLP.
                          Perfect, thanks for the info.

I am in Mtn View alot, so will peek in the surplus or the Walmart.

Ain't nothing wrong with taking your time

                              But if you want to get it REALLY clean, buy one of these cleaning sticks;
CountyComm designs, manufactures and sells select products to federal, state and local government agencies. Specializing in EDC ( Every Day Carry )

And clean it like they do in the vid at the bottom of the page.

Did it to my "clean" AR, and found all kinds of gunk.
