Household Private Indoor Range - possible?

I've seen a few "what if" thought exercises on the forums lately, and decided to throw mine out there.

I'm getting ready to purchase my first house sometime in the coming months, and looking around has gotten me thinking about my future dream home I'd like to build 10-20 years from now. All sorts of possibilities have come up, and a thought I had this morning was:

What are the barriers to having a private indoor target practice setup on your property, attached to your home?

Let's pretend you have enough land to give you a 10' x 90' structure for 1 or 2 25 yard lanes plus some buffer at both ends. You get a good enough backstop for the calibers you want to shoot, sound proof (bullet proof?) the walls and ceiling such that you won't bother the neighbors, and get some good ventilation going so you don't poison yourself.

-I'm sure there are some laws that say this isn't okay - what are they?
-Are there applicable exceptions to all of those laws?
-Would there be a permit process you could go through? I'm sure various cities/counties would have different takes, but would would some common scenarios be?
-Obviously this would never fly in an urban area - what about suburban - Homes in a defined neighborhood, but with large plots? Then, how would "entirely rural" change the picture?
-What if the structure backed up to a hill so the lane is in a partial tunnel? Or was completely underground, in your basement for example?

The company that I work for removed one from a house some years back for the new owners. IIRC the house was in Los Altos or Saratoga. I would imagine that the county regs for firing a gun would still play in though.

And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

        1. Zoning
        2. No range is 100% soundproof, and muffled gunfire will still present a problem.
I don't know about the red tape but those two are the biggest problems in my mind.

If you live within city limits, I would imagine you would never get approval to build one. If you live in an unincorporated area or in the county, the more rural the better, I imagine it would be somewhat easier to get approval.

You could always buy one of these... I am pretty sure you could get away with this on any city, and if not just drive out of the city...

Interesting idea! Though I doubt the legality anywhere 'round these parts

I did, however, make the mistake of clicking around their site further and found this which is just giving me false hope about how it would be to live in a free state.

Maybe we could lobby for supressors. That way people can finally shoot in peace w/o bothering people.

If you had enough coin though, and enough land, if you did it in a basement and nobody could hear, what would be the harm?

Sink it into the ground if you have the ROOM.

Bury two 40 ft Shipping containers end to end. Or a 40 ft and a 48 ft etc to get the length you want.

If they are buried deep enough (at least 10 ft of earth on top of the Containers) you wont have a sound issue.

Too expensive. Use reinforced concrete pipe....used might be available...

I've actualy thought about that very thing some. Lately they are selling shipping containers in the back of the autoshopper.
Some ventilation and some sort of anti richochete lining would be needed as well.

We've got like 5 or 6 of those shipping containers at work, we use them for storage. I think they'd work out great.

I know of several "large wine cellers" in custom homes around Malibu. If you've got the money and space to go underground, sound is not a major issue but, good ventillation is!
