Question about carrying in apartment complex...

First a little backstory before I ask my questions, I tried searching but I don't think this specifically has been asked...If you don't wanna read the back story just skip to the bottom where I ask my questions...

My apartment complex has a contracted security patrol that is never around, and when they are, they just drive in one gate and drive through to the other gate and leave. The max I've seen them is twice in the same night.

We also have security cameras in some of the common areas like the gym and the basketball court, but none that actually monitor the grounds or the entrances. There are no gates that close or open, but we do have a big fence around the perimeter but they're all open at each driveway so cars can come in and out as they please. Oh and we have assigned parking with limited open space parking for anyone else to park as they please.

Now, in my 2+ years living here, my friends house has been broken into and robbed while he wasn't there. They stole all his electronics and his shotgun with ammo. A few cars have been broken into and stolen from or stolen altogether. I would say it's normal type of stuff that happens in any area minus the robbery.

Last July, someone stole my USMC flag hanging from my patio and it made me realize that I have nothing to protect myself if something worse were to happen. So that's when I decided to buy my first firearm. Now fast forward to this past week, an elderly lady was held up at gunpoint and robbed about 500 feet from me.

I don't have a CCW yet, my appointment is in February, and there is nothing I could have done to prevent it since I didn't know it was happening until it was over. But I asked the police officer about it later and he confirmed that I couldn't of legally been carrying my gun with me outside of my apartment anyways withou a CCW or other legal reason. I was outside working on my truck when it went down and I remember seeing the suspect approach her area, then leave quickly in a car that was waiting for him. If I had known what was going down I could have attempted to get the license plate number of the car at the very least.

    Now, onto my questions...

    1) Because the entire complex is considered private property owned by someone or a corporation, if I get written permission from them or the property manager to concealed carry while I am waiting for my CCW to come through can I do it?

    2) Can another citizen who is legally able to purchase and own a firearm in the US and California ask them for the same permission without having a CCW or qualifying for one?

    3) Should I even ask them this?

I basically just want to be able to carry my handgun with me when I am out and about walking around my complex like picking up my mail, walking the dog, taking out the trash, playing at the pool, or just going on a walk with my daughter and wife. I know I'm really close to getting my CCW and I can be patient and wait it out but I would certainly feel a lot more safe in my neck of the woods if I knew I had a better chance to protect myself.

Thank you in advance for your answers, any references to the actual law that this could apply to would be greatly beneficial in case they ask me for more details that show them it's legal.

    1) No, it is public access like a front yard of a private house.

    2) How is this any different than question #1?

    3) No.

Carry something else until your CCW is in place (Spray, Taser, etc.)...

Or move to a place with decent security.

Thank's for the reply, I don't know enough and that's why I felt like asking here. The difference between question 1 and 2 would be like if someone legally owned a handgun at home but didn't want to get a CCW for whatever reason, as opposed to someone in my case that legally owns a handgun and is simply waiting on the CCW process.

I knew a guy who had his apartment broken into. Lost a few firearms as I remember. He knew who did it, but couldnt prove it. One day he heard someone try to open his back sliding door, as he got close to the door (armed) he saw someone run away.

Days later he walked to his car with a large gym bag. Drove off but really he just parked around the corner. He walked back in and took up a surveillance of his apartment... ILLEGALLY carrying concealed.

Long story short, the Complex security spotted him. Made contact, found out he had a firearm on him, arrested him, called the police. He lost the firearm, paid a fine and spent several weeks cleaning trash on the highway.

No you cannot legally CCW inside your apartment complex.

The long explanation, including court cases on point, is at the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Un...oncealed_Carry

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
